Sebenza / Acies -- Comparison Pics

The shiny clip was starting to bother me a bit so I hit it with a torch lighter for about half a minute. The result is interesting. It didn't get rid of the shine, but it did dull it and also gave the clip a little color of blue, bronze, and brown. It definitely blends a little nicer now. Oh and the clip is definitely stainless steel and not Ti. I would have had better results with the torch had it been Ti.

The Sebenzas blade shape, handle shape, pocket clip and pivot bushing all stand out more too me....Sebenza hands down.

A sebenza with a zdp blade would be nice though...

+ 1

Tony,Thanks a lot for the pics. They are very similiar, but far from being called a copy IMHO.

Different - clips,blade shapes,handle shape,steels,grinds

I'm having a hard time warming up to the Acies' handle. While I'm sure it is ergonomic and practical in use, at the same time it reminds me of aluminum handles found on cheap flea market knives. More pocket bushman than sebenza.

No offense meant, just my first impressions based on these photos.

Pocket shots. If any of you are like me then some of your pockets have worn in right about the same area mine have. I took two shots. One in the worn spot and one where there is no wear.

Thanks for those comparison pics, Tony. From those images, I really don't see how anyone could call the Acies a Sebenza copy. As well, that blade finish is not your typical Kershaw bead blast satin at all. I think the Acies stands alone as another fine knife from A.G.Russell.

That said, I prefer the Sebenza for it's overall design and the use of S30V steel for the blade. To me, S30V represents the best combination of wear resistance, the ability to take a fine edge and more importantly, it hones up quickly and easily. Call me crazy, but it is pretty hard to beat the practical design of a Sebenza, IMO.

The more i see it the more i like it. too bad ag didnt use more detailed pictures like this, guess it would be hard to fill a catalog with tons of detailed pics of all the knives, but it would sure help get a better idea of them....

About the only thing that kept me for going over the edge and buying the Acies (so far) is the clip and the screwheads. They keep screaming at me. I know it sounds simplistic, but I like to carry my nicer knives daily, and because of the muted Ti clip on the Sebenza and the fact that it blends in equally well with "business casual" as weekend wear, CR knives get 90% of the EDC duties. Shiny clips stand out like beacons.

I've actually made purchase decisions against some very nice knives because they had goofy pocket clips, so it means something to me.

If I were going to buy a knife of this type, I would choose the Acies over the Sebenza for several reasons:

- tip-down clip option

- I am ambidexterious and want my knife's thumb studs to be the same.

- I like the blade shape.

I have a Sebenza that I have never carried, for the first two reasons above.

Thanks for the great pics Tony, they comfirm my original thoughts that this knife doesn't do a thing for me.

The knife does look good.
As for not liking the low-rider clip and black screws....you guys are whacked. :D

I will say this. If the clip and screws are the only things keeping people from buying this knife I would suggest polishing the screws and maybe sending the knife to STR for one of his custom clips. I wish I had the dough to grab another and do a pass around of this knife. I think alot of folks would like the knife once it was in hand.

Great looking knife! Now if I could just get one in the small seb size...

I think a smaller version would accompany this one perfectly. Good suggestion.
