Sebenza display (now with report and review)

I have a question about displaying large Sebenzas in particular. (I hope that this forum, full of Sebenza experts, is the right place for this post, rather than a more general gear forum.)

I'm looking for a display box specifically for large Sebenzas. These are the parameters:

- I'm looking for display (or display plus storage) rather than just pure storage.

- I'd prefer something that sits on a desk rather than hangs on a wall.

- I'd like it to have dividers, so that the knives aren't sitting loose in the box.

- The box needs to have space for at least 8 knives, but it doesn't need to be huge.

- A lock is a bonus but not necessary.

- Sadly, I don't have the woodworking skills to build my own.

I've looked at old forum posts, without finding much that fits the bill.

So far, I've found the William Henry display box:

Venlo makes a similar (but much more expensive) box:

Thanks all.

They have a few guys/gals around here that have similar boxes to yours/wants. They'll chime in soon:)

What? An old shoebox isn't good enough? 😉 Just kidding - but right now a shoebox really is what I'm using.

Wow! I need one of these too! I just have all of my quietly sleeping in the CRK box that they came in stored over my workbench!
Hope somebody chimes in and I can find one too?
Does anybody know how much that William Henry box is?

$300 for the William Henry Knife Box.

Sources can be found by using Google or other similar search engines and typing "William Henry knife box"

I use something really similar to this to display my staight razors (actually I have 2 like this and one that holds 21). I think they would probably work for Sebenzas also, but they would lay in there at an angle so you would not really see the presentation you might expect.

This sort of topic comes up frequently on Straight Razor forums. Generally speaking, the best displays are usually custom made. They are not cheap, but it's usually the only way to get exactly what you want.

You might also try searching "fountain pen display case" in a search engine. Those would probably work pretty well for this also and they are generally pretty affordable.

I do like that straight razor box, but I think you're right that the presentation isn't right for a Sebenza.

I've looked for pen display cases, but the spaces in the ones I've seen aren't wide enough.

Keep the ideas coming!

Perhaps select a pen display case you like with a removable tray, and modify the tray yourself, or make your own tray?

Check out a craft store and get some ideas...it's not that tough.

I wound up going with the William Henry box. It arrived, and I think it offers great quality at the price. It easily fits 12 large Sebenzas with lanyards, laying flat. This was my first order from Plaza Cutlery, and they handled it well in every regard.

Where's the pics ??????

How do you like the box? Would you recommend it? Any details you'd like to share would be great. Pics are always welcome as well.

Here is the promised report.

I think the box looks really good. The wood is maple, and it's finished with a high gloss. The hardware is brass. The glass top has a small bevel (which can best be seen in the second and third pictures below), and it has a WH logo etched into the lower right corner (as shown in the first picture below). Even empty, it's heavier than it looks -- probably around 5 pounds. The exterior measurements are roughly 12 inches across, 8 1/2 inches deep, 3 3/4 inches tall.

In the top tray, the individual compartments are around 6 1/4 inches long and 1 1/2 inches across. In the bottom tray, they're slightly bigger, around 7 inches long and 1 3/4 inches across. The compartments and interior of the box are lined with a soft suede-like fabric. The top tray is made of the same maple as the box itself.

The individual compartments are plenty big for a large Sebenza, laying flat, wearing a CRK lanyard. In the top tray, it's possible to put two upright, next to each other (as shown in the last picture below). That's not possible in the bottom tray, at least not without the top tray resting on the knives in the bottom tray. (The same thing happens if you try to stack two large Sebenzas laying flat in the bottom tray.) So the maximum capacity is 18 large Sebenzas -- 6 below and 12 on top.

Here are some pictures:

The box with one knife (a large annual Sebenza):

I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to keep a small to medium Sebenza collection on display and within easy reach. I think it beats having each knife packed in its box, put away on a shelf somewhere.

Happy Fourth of July, all.

That is a beautiful box!!!!!
Did you get it directly from WH Knives????

AJ, I got it from Plaza Cutlery, which had the best pricing and delivered flawlessly.

Wow, that's a wonderful looking box. It looks extremely well made and the wood is done beautifully. The finish is just spectacular and I'm sure looks even better in person. I would imagine the price of the box isn't much in comparison to filling it with Sebenzas. Thanks for sharing the pictures and your thoughts.
