Sebenza flicking

Just use discretion. I think these knives can take a fair bit of abuse, but I bet it doesn't feel good to find lock rock on your sebbie.

Oh, they can take a whole lot of abuse!

When I first got my 21, I carried it for 3 months straight. In that time period I was digging holes in dirt with it, chopping stuff, used the Insingo swedge to pry open paint cans, I dropped it multiple times off scissor lifts/ladders, done some really forceful cutting against steel/concrete/drywall, used the scales as an impact tool to chip some concrete, used it as a door stop, pryed access panels/baseboards off, used it as a temporary shim, stabbed it into a wall to act as a temporary "coat hanger", you name it and I've done it with my Sebenza:D

After all the use, it's developed a tiny amount of side to side play (probably from prying). It's been taken apart probably 100 times, and still locks up like day 1.

I'm sure some flicking is fine, but I still wouldn't encourage it. I wouldn't encourage you to use it as a doorstop either:D;)

Seems like flicking a knife open has actually become part of the usefulness of the knife. I remember many years ago when the Buck 110 was the knife to carry and folks talked about opening it one handed vs using the nail nick, the trick was to squeeze the exposed exposed portion of the closed blade between your thumb and index finger and rotate it open slowly. Pretty nifty trick once mastered. Then with the advent of the disc, thumbstud, flipper, spring, lever and the rest of the line up opening your knife one handed opening became very easy and convenient.

Somehow this opening system for some has morphed into the primary use of a knife, like Marcinek has said some of us believe that if it doesn't flip open very well it must be a design flaw. Contrary I enjoy the slow methodical opening of my Sebbie, or the flipper of my new and older Hinderer's, the Spyerco hole or the Emerson disc, they all aid in my opening the knife blade one handed and that is the design function. Personally I do not sit in front of the tv and repeatedly flick any knife, generally I place my knife in my pants pocket in the morning and it rides there until I need to cut something.

When I think of all the design time and added materials devoted to making a knife open lightening quick it moves away from the primary use which is cutting and relegates cutting secondary as to how quick the knife snaps open. Discussions on bearings, caged bearings, nylon washers vs bronze, and the plethora of things a maker or company should do to make a knife open faster moves away from the end result of what a knife was really meant to do.

That said if flicking your knife open repeatedly, and gauging the quickness and ease of deployment is your thing, I totally respect that and each to his own and enjoy, after all that is why we all come here to discuss all things knives.

That is awesome blues, I use my knives pretty hard but I think it's safe to say you go HAM!

I'm guessing there's not a whole lot of folders that would have made it through all that with only a tiny amount of play.

I used my insingo to free this pump from a pit a couple of days ago.

That's my co worker, not me. I was just standing around taking pics. Haha

Get in the hole!

I gotta get a job working construction, so I can sit around flicking my sebenza and take pictures of people who are working.

I hope you know I'm kidding.

As expensive as they are. You should be able to flick the thing. I have one and flick it. I don't have any issues.

As expensive as my Ferrari is I should be able to go off-roading with it!

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Also sad broken Seb is sad...

He implies he received it like that but he probably wrist flicked it once. That's all it takes! One serious flip and the blade breaks right off.

Good stuff Marcus!

The pack of coveralls says it all, "sh*ts about to get deep in here":D

I once heard about a guy who flipped his Sebenza so many times it imploded. True story.

I flick my sebenza 21 open daily. It's made from extremely hard stainless steel and titanium...I'm pretty sure it can take it. Flick away IMO!

I find no reason to flick a Seb. (It is fun) but I prefer to open folders using both hands just because I personally like the positive feel....

CRK makes a tough knife that can take a beating well beyond what most people may think.

I treat them no differently than a Strider, Hinderer, or MKT and there are zero issues.
