I know this will piss a few folks off but I ust have to ask. Why on earth would you pick a Sebenza that cost's $400.00 when you can get a Benchmade for $150.00 that has more stability built in than a liner lock. I have handled a few Sebenza's and there is nothing wrong with the quality of finished product, I just don't see why anyone would want a liner lock for their EDC when the axis lock is available and cheaper to boot. My choice would be an 806SD2 for work and 710HSSR for casual. I just think Benchmade delivers the bang for the buck.

Wow! I wonder how many times this has been discussed before!

Why thanks for your words of wit! I was seriously wanting some input as to why everyone loves the Sebenza's, but I understand that sometimes when you are full of whit you just have to share.

First of all, yes this topic has been covered countless times and a simple search would pull up days worth of "why $$$$ for the Sebbie when $$ for the ____ will do just as well" quality reading. Thus the "whit" from the long term GOLD member gajinoz.

If after handling both models the BM satisfies you equally or more, that is great. For others, the Sebenza is worth the money.

In addition to what Dizos wrote, I'd like to add the following perspective: the probability of receiving a knife that is not perfectly executed from the Chris Reeve shop comes close to the probability of seeing pigs fly. You can get perfect, or near-perfect knives from Benchmade and Spyderco and other production makers, but the incidence rate is lower.

My point is that for some, it is not enough to know that the knife in their hands is a perfect specimen. These people also derive comfort in knowing that if they ever had to replace the knife, they can go to any dealer at any place and any time and receive a knife just as perfect as the one in their hands.

That, in addition to knowing that if they ever experience a problem with the knife, the Chris Reeve shop will take care of it with a level of service that is rarely exceeded.

Is that important to you? Maybe not. You could pass on pop-tarts too, I bet, but I know people who can't live without 'em.

Note that perfection, in the context of this post, refers to fit and finish. It does not refer to whether the Sebenza is the perfect design!

I'm willing to bet that if BM made a knife as well as a Sebenza, the Sebenza would be the less expensive of the two.

Myself, I don't understand why so many wish to carry knives with such thick edges. I would much rather have a thin edge that actually cuts well over a thick edge that doesn't. But that's just me. Buy what you like and what works best for you. After 35 years of using a knife, I know what works for me.
Opinions vary..........

I held a Sebenza for the first time this last week, I can see what the hype is about! There is no comparison to Benchmade or Spyderco. Sure, those companys make great knives for the money, but the Sebenza is absolute folding perfection! :D

Precisely.

As for the difference between thick and thin: I tend to see it in terms of 'right tool for the job'. (This is also a thinly disguised excuse for having so many knives :) ).

My Calypso is a thin, flat ground knife that slices like crazy and I carry it all the time, either on me, (city EDC), or in the car. For the weekend I have my SnG or Sebbie with me because I'm more likely to do nastier things with a knife and I want thick and solid. So, as you say, use what works best for you, or if you're like me, own a few different ones and use whatever works best for the job.

Well I own all of these knives and they are all great knives, it's all in what you are looking for. For me the Sebenza works better as a folding wood carving knife then any other one I have bought and tried. If I was to do something that could damage my Sebenza, then I go for one of my other knives, if they break they are less expensive.

one more time....

Why buy a $150 Axis lock when they offer a $70 one?

Why buy production when customs are available?

Why buy American made?

Why spend so much money on something that just cuts?

Why not just buy a multi-tool?

Why not just carry a pair of scissors?

Why don't you eat pizza every night?

Mexican?

Chinese?

Sandwiches?

Everybody likes Sanwiches, don't they?

What, sandwiches aren't good enough for you?

Why can't you be more like me?

Why do you have your own tastes and preferences?

Why can't we all just get along?

The Sebenza has qualities the BM710 does not, and believe me, I'm a big supporter of the BM710. The Sebenza has Titanium handles and a titanium frame lock. It also has a hollow ground blade. It is also finished perfectly. More time and energy is spent producing a Sebenza, so you pay more for it.

I'd love to own a Sebenza, but it's just not not in my meager budget. Someone ought to buy me one, just so I could compare it to my Spydercos and Benchmades. I promise to give you all my humble views and my utter gratitude to the sender. :D

Well put my man....well put!!!!

I never could determine why someone would buy a Sebenza. So I bought a Benchmade. Then I bought a Sebenza. I still use and carry both of them depending on what day it is. I prefer the lock on a fixed blade to both of them though. :) Oh, that's when I'm not carrying a slipjoint. :p

I agree Benchmade delivers good "bang for the buck" though I've never bought any, however I hope the concept of "wanting more all around bang PERIOD" is not foreign to your way of thinking!

What, the search function isn't working again? Man, if I had a dollar for every one of these "Sebenza" threads, I could retire ....

if ya really wanna see some nutz check out the emerson spec war collectors, $750 and up, up, up.
