Sebenzas... You gotta love em'

So you have gone from BM 42 to a Spyderco Tenacious to a ZT0350 to a Strider SNG and now a CR Sebenza.

It can handle what a folder is supposed to handle.

A thick blade held by two thicker Titanium handles.

Obviously someone is getting annoyed with all my questions but I got to say, at my age I don't exactly make a steady income. Since people twice my age and older with more job experience are all trying to get jobs there really is nothing left for the younger people. WE need money too:D
What I'm trying to say is that I am buying this knife, and then since I don't really know how much money I am gunna get next, or even if I am going to get any at all, I have to make sure my purchase will be good.

If that's the case then I certainly don't recommend that you blow a ton of money on a Sebenza.

There are many other knives out there that will give you 90% of the performance at 30%-50% of the price.

...i think this thread has made that pretty clear...after playing with it and showing it off to friends for a week, you'll be bored with it and it will dawn on you what a foolish expense you made.

$400 for a pocket knife...YIKES!

I agree with others. If money is really tight id probably pass on the sebenza and wait till your in a better place financially. If your too scared to get it scratched or stolen because you invested so much, it is probably too much money for you to buy in your given cicumstances--and most likely you won't even use it. Knives get damaged and they get lost or stolen. I havent had one stolen or lost but it does happen. You cant prevent it 100%.

If you use a knife daily, it is very likely that you will drop it or it will come out of your pocket and nail some nice hard cement. It will leave scratches. Lots of people post pictures of their safe queens or knives they use very very lightly so they look perfect. If a knife is used it will get scratched up whether it be a 10 dollar or 500 dollar custom.

I have a large 21 and I love it. I use it almost every day (rotated with a couple other blades. I recently went back to school but during the summer months im a gardener and my seby got used real good for a couple months. She cut cord, plants (when i forgot my pruners) and lots of other random crap. Ive dropped her a couple times and she has some nicks and scratches from work and daily life. I think it adds a lot of character and I wouldnt trade her for a brand new one.

I used to be anal about getting my knives wrecked and had the designated user and the ones I kept "nice". I found I fell in love with my users and got bored of my "nice" knives. So i don't really keep any safe queens anymore and just use my favorites and love em.

Chris reeve makes some amazing knives and I think the seb is well worth the cash, but if you feel you can't replace, wait till you can. Good luck

I'm probably the only one here, but the sebenza design really doesn't appeal to me O_o. Then again, I've never held one - maybe I'd fall in love with it if I did.

Shoot, I'd love to have a sebenza, but I wouldnt do myself justice to buy a $400 folder, especially sense I think a SAK is around the same quality and i use my knife for almost all my chores....even prying!!!!!! *GASP*, But I carry around a case slimeline trapper for the moment until it breaks. i just use knives to hard i guess. i'd give a sebbie a very nice work out.

To you this may sound corny, but this is actually really inspiring. I still want the sebenza, and if it can surely handle tasks like that I'd say a little character wouldn't hurt it, and thinking about it now, I think when I'm using it it is just like any other knife, I like it, so I have to use common sense to not let it get stolen. I mean, I wouldn't want even my cheaper folders to get stolen. I think it would make the knife cooler every time I use it, and I am not worried about scratches. How do you sharpen yours?

Best folders made, for what folders are intended to be IMHO. Custom or production.
Nothing beats the straight handle of a sebenza, and at .125 they are wicked cutters, unlike some of the newer prybar folder trend knives that will not slice well at all.

A SAK and a Sebenza aren't even CLOSE in the same quality.

A lot of us use our Sebenzas hard with no worries. The Sebenza isn't an expensive folder that's only nice to look at -- it is my favorite knife to use and carry and it's not a knife I'm afraid to use hard. If you want one of the best production knives around, a knife that will last your lifetime and more, a knife ready to take the hard use you ask of it, the Sebenza is the knife for you. I am preparing to do a thru-hike of the AT (2100 miles and 5-6 months) and the Sebenza is the knife I am planning to take. It really is just that solid a folder.

It sounds like the Spyderco Sage II would be perfect for you. While I agree that the Sebenza is a cut above the rest, and I do carry one almost daily, the Sage II is an excellent knife at an excellent price for around $150. Hell, buy two and still save yourself a hundred bucks.

If you're dead set on purchasing a Sebenza then I would say find yourself a user in onr of the forums for sale areas and use it till the wheels fall off! Then just send it back to CRK and they'll make her look brandy new again.

Good advice.
The Sage II is the first knife to get some EDC use other than sebbies in years. Acually I've been EDCing the SageII more than my small micarta sebbie the past month. Great knife for the price.

I think anyone considering a Sebenza should pick one up. IMO there is nothing that scratches the itch as well. Some come close, but for me, the Seb (Lg) covers all of what I REALLY appreciate in a knife.

GOOD LUCK MAN! My advice to you is BUY PRE-LOVED!!!! Anyone who tells you that this is a bad idea does not realize that your loss will be next to zero. It is pretty much the same thing as putting money in a bank account... It is just there... Instead of your money being in a bank account, it will be in a Sebenza. You can then decide if you like it... if you like it... USE it! If not, flip it.

I'd say you are good to go. I'm not rich man, but due to my priorities, I can afford a nice knife here and there. ALL of us spend money on "luxuries." I find if I just eat out less it is MORE than enough to buy a nice toy here and there. Who is to say that it is not smart or cool to buy a Sebenza instead of a bicycle or iPod. Do what you want with your money and enjoy what you do with your money...

Archman, are you liking the Sebenza more right now? You have an older vid on the 'tube and I got the impression you were enamored with the SnG at the time. Maybe you can do another update video...

I am glad I inspired you =)

I sharpen mine using the sandpaper technique. Ive tried stones before but I cant get the edge I like. I love a good convex edge and I find stropping for touching an edge up can keep your knife razor sharp for a long time. I only touch up with sandpaper (2000 grit) when I get some edge rolling. I love this method and I think its the best method for me.

These guys have some good vids on how to do it and they also sell a nice sharpening package. Really worth trying out, i am glad I did.

Good luck!
