second anvil sample - not as bad as I feared

Have you mesured the hardness?

To bad I don’t live closer I have a portable hardness tester that is designed to sit on top of these kinds of things and test hardness. Now where thy doing the gardening or just casting. I’m wondering if it’s in an as cast state still.

I agree that the damage shown looks a lot softer than the specs. I would worry about the radiused corners not holding up with that problem.

Send it to me and let me bash blades and steel on it for a while to see if it holds up in use :)

That sucks, looks like a great shape for blade work. Hope you can get it sorted out.

Good, I was pleased to see the shape came out like we discussed.

Sometimes the dents can look worse than they are, especially if the damage was caused by a hardened face framing hammer. A forging hammer may not do as much damage.

For those not in the loop, Charles has decided to manufacture a specific use bladesmithing small anvil. It has gone through a couple design changes and ended up with some very useful features. I won't discuss them here as Charles will want to do that when everything is finalized. One of the best is obvious - all the mass is under the forging area! This can make a lighter anvil out perform a much heavier one. Placed on a study base, this may be all the anvil many makers will ever need.

Just my $.02, but I would NEVER purchase an anvil that soft. lt should not be dinging like that. Even if it works ok with hot steel (and it probably will, since it's a large mass of metal), I would be very upset to buy an anvil with that HT.

The shape is awesome, and it's exciting to think this kind of bladesmithing anvil will be available at a decent price.

I'm certain it's a HT issue, and can be fixed, but the foundry should have done a better job. I may end up redoing the HT myself, but will wait until Stacy gives his review. it's a design tate no one else currently makes and should serve all knife makers well.

You better do a chemical analysis first to see what you have !
Good point, would hate to waste time trying to HT only to find it was 1018 instead of the 1045 I paid for. It went out in the mail today, seemed pretty solid in the large flat rate box with strapping. Will be curious how it looks when it shows up in Virginia.
