Securing a Hawk To a Pack

Here's some more ideas for "pack right (side), head up" carry...

You are definitely on to something. My problem with it is that the entire handle must be drawn through the tube. I would like to see it evolve to something similar with a cup at the butt of the haft and a notch, similarto the one you have created for the head, pull up about an 1 1/2 or so and remove.

Think outside the box GrassSmoka. Imagine this proto unit flipped upside-down, so that the head sits (down) inside a fitted pvc "cup." Also imagine the hawk head sitting deeper (maybe another 2-inches) inside the pvdc "head cup." Then, secure the haft with some sort of retaining device/clip and you will have "mounted pack right side/head down carry".

For deployment, simply reach up (and over the top of your pack), snap the haft to the rear approximately 1-inch, and then draw the haft up and over your shoulder (hawk is drawn haft first, head last), ala Michael Douglass' "shotgun draw" in Romancing The Stone (as Stephen mentioned earlier).

Yea?

I'm makin' a run over to Ronnie's house to borrow a dremel tool which may enable me to shape the pvc better then the saw and razor-blade knife I've been using.

I was foloing around with my Trail Hawk trying to go through (and understand) the motion of drawing a Trail Hawk (haft first) up and over my right shoulder, and I realized that it would be quite easy to accidently twist or turn the head to the left and slice open the back of one's neck or head. This wouldn't be too hard to do, especially if one got panicy and/or fumbled in an emergency. Food for thought fellas.

Me thinks you need to be introduced to kydex...

that's actually a Tactical Tailor 2-piece MAV. - it's not set up to carry that giga-mantic dang pelican case - that thing is a couple cubed feet inside, at least, brother.

i had such a pelican-case fetish, i had to start making them myself - i was making aircraft fuel tanks with a buddy, and part of the pre-flight test is to pressurize the tank and make sure it doesn't have air leaks (and therefore, presumably no fuel leaks) - and then it hit me - these are like Pelican Cases.

....long story short - some of my children might actually go to college now that my pelican-jonesing is abated (a little). :D

Many packs already have the ideal way to carry a trailhawk already but most people just don't realize it. In fact many pack manufacturers just add them without knowing what they are for. Most good mountaineering packs have what is called an ice axe loop near the bottom. Tons of packs now have them just because it seems like they are supposed to even though they are never going to hold an ice axe ,however they are perfect for a trail hawk. Here is a photo I quickly took of my trailhawk in the loop of my trak pack.

Then you just flip it up and attach the handle like so.

My Trekk pack actually has the other part of the ice axe attachment to hold the handle although I did not bother attaching it for the photo. You can see it under the handle in the second photo. It is pretty easy to find a way to attach the handle even if you don't have one. You should also either rig a sheath to cover the sharp edge or even just a piece of rubber tubing split and stuck over the edge.

Here are some pictures of a prototype i cobbled together today...but first a picture of the mighty Camp Tramp!

That is pretty sweet but you do need some way to cover that sharp edge. You also might want to grab a can of that krylon fusion spray paint that works on plastic.

Yes, I will ultimately paint it black, but I figured the picture contrast would be better if I left it white for now.

I glued all of the joints with pvc glue, and the unit seems very strong. However, this is just a prototype and I need to think this over a little more...I already have some ideas to make it better.

Then I will build a 2nd prototype unit which will be...better.

outstanding.

bro Q, keep pushing the developmental envelope and don't worry about what folks say - the problem with having your own Vision is no buddy else can see it.

The voices are telling me to cut a wedge out of a 12-inch long piece of rubber pipe insulation...then, to glue the pipe insulation inside the pvc vertical spin... then to nestle the hawk haft inside the insulation...the voices say that this may secure the haft so that I can do away with the stupid piece of duct tape...MAKE THE VOICES STOP!

i usually listen to the voices until they make me strip nekkidd and run around with an accordion.

usually.

i have a sneaking suspicion that this kind of permissiveness and toleration is how the boomerang was invented.
