Seeking Opinions - My first knife

BM 940 is an excellent choice. The axis lock is a feet of engineering. Just pull the trigger and flick your wrist, and don't get your fingers in the way. The 940 is a fine cross section of utility every day carry and style.

Hey everyone,
so I went to the military store and looked at the knives again. This time mainly focusing on the BM 940/943 and on an earlier suggestion the 710.

Wow! The 710 is huge! Feels great in the hand but definately a little on the large side for me.

I also looked at the Spyderco Native which is another attractive option for me.

With the BM943, the blade tip does not look as durable as the 940.
The 940 is a first production run with the 154CM steel and they also have a newer one with the S30V steel. Is there really a difference between 1st and 2nd production runs? Other than the numbered blade?

BTW both are going for $175 (is that a good price?)

The Spyderco Native fits my hand perfectly and lockback mechanism did give me some concern reading about it, but handling the knife puts away all doubt.

Of the ones on the original list, I would recommend the Benchmade 940.

But as mentioned, if you read around the forums, you will definitely find out more info, more than you may have expected.

The Spyderco Delica 4 would also be an excellent option.

I love the my benchmade 940 the tip is excellently strong, but won't penetrate, the 943 will penetrate much better, if you are using the tip to slice then get the 940 but if you want to say stab soda bottles or anything that may require a more piercing tip, the 943 is the way to go. The 710 is large, but you do get used to it fast, if you decide to go that route, you will find in around a week, the 710 will feel natural and the perfect size, unless you have smaller hands. Fit's me great, so does the 940. Get the S30V blade it's a slightly better steel, also for sharpening get a Spyderco ceramic, either their benchstone or the sharpmaker, the fine (not ultra fine) sticks leave a great edge.

If you liked the Native, I would go for it.

Thats alot of knife for the price, and I've never heard anyone complain.

Interesting that you landed on the Native, as I have 3 of them and like them all. Highly recommended.

Hey guys,
thanks for the great info, especially all the websites to order from.
I'm definately getting the Benchmade 940 SBK model.

Will also pick up the Spyderco Native, and probably the Spyderco Assist for the car.

I'm starting down the road of addiction.....there goes the retirement plan.
Boy is the wife gonna be mad!

If you can get the non serrated version, imho the geometry of the 940 doesn't compliment serrations well. It's really a slicer more than a serrated saw.

I figure my knife to be light to medium outdoor usage and for protection. (Travel frequently and going abroad soon)

may i ask what you mean by "abroad"?
there are plenty countries where locking folder are forbidden.
(like France for exemple)
This beeing said, i have a 940 has EDC quite often:D... but if i am being catch with it, it will be confiscated and i will have probably a fine.:(

Hi Freddy,
going to a remote part of Argentina with the wifey.
And probably spending a few days in Buenos Aires.

BTW, going to pull the trigger this afternoon and order the BM940, the Spyderco Native and the Spyderco Assist.

What am I doing!?!?!?

Just so you know, most walmarts carry the spyderco native with S30V steel that is made in Golden, CO. Its right at $40 bucks and you can have instant gratification. Some other natives don't come with the premium S30V steel and I believe some are made abroad. Just thought I would say something in case you didnt know.

Only the beginning of a slow death for your wallet.

(You didn't use any knives when you were in the service? How is this your first knife?)

Okay....so I pulled the trigger and just ordered all three knives. Will post pics when I get them. Now I'm excited.

When I was in the service I carred an issued bayonet with a rifle ring that went on the end of my M16. Also had a very nice black Swiss Army 10 tool that my dad gave me. Still have it.

Where I'm from (Not the US!) Knives/Weapons are a little harder to come by. But the military made sure we had just about what we needed in the field.
Cheers.

$175 is a bit high for the knife. It is $120-130 at both gpknives.com and new graham

Thanks for the suggestion. New Graham had all 3 in stock so I called the order. Grand total of $267. Not a bad deal for 3 knives.

Really looking forward to getting them.

For $85, for example, he would be able to get a lot more than a Hissatsu.

Hardly. Buying a knife that even the manufactures say is "designed only for combat", or is named "CQC" or "assault", is one of the worst ways you can go for a self-defense tool.

What's with the brand loyalty?

This may be necessary for you. This certainly doesn't apply to enough people for you to claim to ALWAYS have one. Serrations are quite useful, but to many not worth compromising inches of plain edge blade for it.

We're not "writing off" CRKT. I'm writing off Hissatsu, the knife, which is completely unsuitable for his purposes of use when travelling, especially since many countries have much worse knife laws than the US. It is also unsuited as a "light to medium outdoors" knife, which he also needed.

FlaMtnBkr, on the other hand, is wondering about your brand loyalty.

Spaznode,Your post is the most posssible most stupid of all time. About knives.

Do you read your type before you submit? Here is your type:

You will get the hall of shame for that one Spaz.

What the FUC....k is it your business wether I like CRKT. I carried some of them for 5 plus years. I also carry Bucks, Schrades, Cold Steel, KBAR, on and on.

However I DO NOT carry $200.00 plus "show" magazine knives. Waste of money.

Your ignorant statement about serrated carry betrays your inexperince about rescue.

All in all Im not impressed with you.

BTW, in case your not yet aware, its very dangerous to travel abroad for an American. YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!

IF your going to carry, Then bring enough knife. Who cares about the woods then?
