Seems like Spyderco made enough 15V for the market

I would not have the balls to send my knife's edge to be publicly evaluated by such an expert as yourself haha. Nice findings
I greatly appreciated it, I was genuinely curious to see what was happening.

I am also sending him a custom made strop loaded with diamond compound to maintain and enjoy the edge I created for him.

I would like for enthusiasts to enjoy the BBB CPM 15V, it is quite special and won't always be around.

Perhaps over time people will understand the BBB Spyderco CPM 15V was a rare combination.

It was all for you guys. The end users, the sharpeners, the edge enjoyers.

Follow up on this after evaluation of this users knife.

It was a sharpening geometry error.

We can see on the laser goniometer a massive amount of light scattering due to rough sharpening scratches and a range of angles.

The bevel had too many angles from freehand sharpening variation to properly interact with the apex and deburr cleanly.

I reprofiled and sharpened the edge. It deburred and apexes as it should so it is not a heat treatment issue or a steel issue.

The laser edge goniometer shows the edge bevel is one geometry at 18.5° per side.

*Note there is some artifact due to the tape I put on the side of the blade. It's the "dots" of light on the outer edges of the scale that is showing what is being measured.

Geometry always has to be ruled out first before we can make conclusions about steel and HT.

Fear No Steel 🤙
Fantastic evaluation, BBB. I should send something I sharpened and get humbled.

I've seen your edges on Instagram and they look fantastic. Of course, that would be interesting to look at them with very high magnification.

Yet, I don't think it would be as humbling as it would be more of a pat on the back.

Keep up the good work.

I completely understand where you're coming from. For one of my hobbies, I can do it here at home and be perfectly happy. But when I share it with others, that's when I'm really enjoying it to its fullest extent.

There's some internal conflict that comes with having a 15V knife. One might be tempted to put it in the drawer and only take it out when wearing white gloves. But it can only be fully experienced when you take it out and start hacking through stuff. It's like when you get a few bottles of really good wine. You can put them away for a few years, but they're kind of pointless until you take it down and pour a few glasses. When you drink the wine, it's gone forever. But with the 15V knife, it will hopefully last a lifetime.

I guess that I have been out of the loop but is 15v really that great of a steel? I am not trying to insult anyone but is it because of toughness? Edge retention? Corrosion resistance? If it is that good I may have to pick up a new Lil’ Native in 15v instead of a Meerkat in SPY27.

You've nailed it.

Just like in this video.

We are the fragile part.

Shawn, your video inspired me to open one of those bottles I've been saving on Tuesday, my next day off.
I'll have to get one of those 15V Spydies soon too.
We aren't here forever.
I've really enjoyed the 15v spydies that I have. I loaned out my 15v pm2 to a forum member that works as a lineman (I believe). I told him not to be afraid to use it because I don't keep safe queens and I wasn't concerned about it getting damaged; it's a tool.

It had some minor damage/micro chips when I sent it to him because I had used it for various things for about 4 or 5 months prior. He said he stropped it a little to get that worked out.

I think he had it for a couple months and used it for all kinds of tasks. All he did was strop it before sending it back. The edge won't shave hair anymore, but it will slice paper just fine.

15v with the BBB heat treatment is probably one of my favorite steels for a folding knife. I'm a big fan.

15V is gone after the sale of Crucible. What's left is all there will be for the foreseeable future. It really is the best time to get one before they are gone for good and you have to pay aftermarket prices for one.
Wow! It never occurred to me that we would run out of a particular steel. Now I am really happy that I ordered a Lil’ Native with a backlock in brown G10 and 15v. I should see it next Tuesday.

Larrin rated 15V as follows:
- edge retention - 10
- toughness - 3.5
- corrosion resistance - 4

I think only Maxamet and Rex 121 have better edge retention, but less toughness. I think 15V is a great steel!
