I find it ironic that brown won, but now hemlock is winning in this poll when it looks red.

anyone else find that funny?
I thought it had a good chance based on how many from the brown camp supported it as a possibility in the last poll. Brown voters like it because it's mostly brown. Red voters like it because of the red tones. Copperhead is a strong contender for the exact same reasons.

No question about it - blood red saw cut is very much red...

Hemlock is very much brown...

Not a great picture but if I handed the 'hemlock' knife to someone and said "name that color," most would say "brown." The other calf roper is antique autumn. But IMHO the hemlock has a depth to it that other brown knives from GEC don't have, almost like a Fat Tire beer bottle shining in the sunlight at a BBQ.

If I hadn't traded away the 14 and autumn 66, i'd get a decent side-by-side. If I hadn't given up drinking, I'd get a side-by-side of the Fat Tire bottle too.

Hemlock is more brown than Copperhead, in my opinion. I had a 66 in hemlock and it definitely was more brown than red. I see a lot of red/yellow/orange and some brown on my example of Copperhead. It has also lightened up significantly since I have had it.

We are dealing with three different Hemlocks, Jack and Gary!! Eastern and Western Hemlocks are different trees, and thrive on their respective sides of Canada; and the Hemlock of Socrates is the Poisonous Shrub!!
Yes indeed Charlie, but isn't the Hemlock after which the GEC Hemlock is named the Eastern Hemlock, as was noted earlier in this thread, or is it in fact the Western Hemlock?! o_O
Another spot of news; I tried to talk to Bill, to ensure he will Color/dye these knives as we might ask, but he had to leave early today!! I will try again in the next couple of days.
While I am on the subject of native trees (Hemlocks), this is a Sheffield table knife, rehandled by my friend Bob, in Plane tree wood Culled in London!!

Back to your regular broadcast!!! :p 😁
Very handsome  Let me know if you ever want anymore table knives sending over ;)

That’s looks great!… as an alternative, of course! 😁

Hemlock making a charge!!!
That plus its backing up to finish the job!
I knew you guys could dumb it down for me! I googled hemlock green and theres an actual paint color that is certainly a shade of green, so I was a tad confused.
By the sound of it the name is more to do with the dye source..hemlock....than than the resulting colour.....much the same I feel ...as The Lincoln Green of Robin Hood and Merrie Men fame...which is more light blue.
I am totally amazed that Hemlock is doing so well!! It's pretty interesting, but I never thought it would get more than a few votes!!
Colors have different characteristics when they are infused in dye, like for bone, and in paint for plane (flat) surfaces! Also when glass or transparent material is colored!!
I have to admit it's an intriguing color!

I'm with Les on this. Saw cut Hemlock Green may not look anything like the jigged version. It'd be nice to see a sample. Meanwhile I'm sticking with Copperhead.
I dunno about that...without meaning to be impolite...it sounds a bit flipperacious...I understand Leslies concern but nothing ventured nothing gained, fortune favours the bold etc.
I was hoping for this to be a light sepia color. Sepia barlows do exist obviously but i wanted this on such a larger frame. Same can be said for the copperhead and such, if you really want a copperhead barlow, you can buy one eventually. Secondly i thought the dark brew would be extremely nice too but it is a new color and we may see it more in the future.

Hemlock may be our best choice for many involved. You wanted wood? This is named for a tree. You wanted green? Its called hemlock green after all. You wanted red? This has redness at the bolsters. You wanted brown? Well it IS in the brown poll afterall.
AAIIRRGGACCTLY!
Ah, the futility of human endeavor!!
Hopefully it won't be Purple; - or Chartreuse!!😁
thrres always next year...lets never have the same colour twice again.

Yes. Me.🤪🤭👍

Thank you.
I just switched my vote from Chestnut to Copperhead because there’s no way I’m going to vote for Hemlock without seeing an example on sawcut material. Way too big of a gamble.

Turn my back a bit and y'all let hemlock go nuts ... gonna have to change my vote to copperhead since hemlock is my last choice of those offered. If the Sepia crowd can mount a comeback I am open to switching back. Antique and chestnut are very similar to copperhead so maybe those votes (and others 🙏) will transfer to overtake the green menace!

Did I mention smooth ivory would have been real classy on this one? 🤨

Youtube video of a GEC 470116 Viper in Hemlock Gig Bone (first knife presented out of three in the video).
As far as I can see it is dark brown (almost looks like the Dark-Brewed) with a slight red hue by the edges and bolster, especially around the latter.

Not my video btw.
I thought the very same thing about the dark brewed 83s! Can't wait to get mine to compare to my 66.

May or may not help. None of us has a sawcut hemlock to show off. Soooo, lets look at a saw cut Copperhead, Jigged Copperhead, Jigged Hemlock, and imagine what a saw cut hemlock could look like:

Talk umamongst yourselves.

I think the color most people prefer is a dark reddish brown, similar to the old Case redbone, and I think the reason red did not win in the previous poll was the fear of getting something pink. With nothing even remotely pink about the Hemlock, it is winning, not in spite of being red, but because it is partially red, with brownish overtones.
