Self Defense Khukuri

I keep seeing threads that dance around this, so I'm diving in. It seems like the Sirupatis are favored by martial artists, the AK's by people who want to cut down trees.

What's the "best" khukuri if you want one for self defense? I'm talking about the ability to lop off a hand or head of an unwelcome nocturnal visitor (2 legged). I was liking the WWII's but would like to know what the gurus here say.

Thanks!

A great deal of this will be "personal feel",and you might have a long thread going. I like the Sirupati - my 14" may well be my carry khuk when I get it all sorted out, due to convenient size as well as its' aptitude as a weapon. Two knives stand out, however. Both the Malla and the Gelbu special clicked on a light first time out of the scabbard - big neon sucker that said "WEAPON". For unnvited night-time guests at home, the only thing I can do is echo Yvsa - CHITLANGI!!..If you have room to swing it, and have the number of one of the really good clean-up services. All of the last three have weight and diminsions which enable thoughts of disection, bisection, and stuff that will really mess up the carpet. A 12 ga. with double-ought is actually a cleaner weapon (but less fun  )

Swede79 welcome to the Cantina! I think any smaller khuk would work well for conceled carry and self defense! I carry a 12 inch Angkhola that would with no problem take a hand or head off (preferably Osama bin Ladins) if needed! I also carry a 15 inch Sirupati that is a very mean blade and is very light but 3/8 thick and could cut through just about anybody!

Welcome Swede,
My vote would be the 18" Gelbu Special. It dances nimble in the air like a weapon should. The 18" gives it enough weight to do the job. The blades with the deep fullering seem to me to get that speedy advantage, plus the strength derived from a fullered blade.

I think Wal came very close -- personal feel. I think I'd opt for a kobra or Gelbu Special but I'm old and the ligher weight is easier for me to handle.

For "action work" I prefer my 16.5" WW II blade. It just feels right. The sirupatis I've handled didn't have that "magic" feel for me.

I believe I'm likely to have similar feelings about the GRS Finn is trading me, as well...

Thanks for all the great replies! I've been lurking around this forum for a while, and the information that gets passed around is great!

New Cantineros come in, are impressed by the wide selection of blades, and usually ask "which one will......" fill in the blank. Every time this happens, we all pitch in, 'cause we've all been there. When I get into these threads, a small, dull bell has tried to ring over and over....Now I know what it is :D HI is the reason the effegies of the goddess Kali have so many arms - so she can hold her"favorite" Khukuri. Glad that got cleared up

Absolutely!!!! :D

And although I haven't had the pleasure of fondleing an 18" Chitlangi I believe it would also be an excellent choice if one found the 21"+ to be a tad on the long side.
In my opinion the Chitlangi is the absolute epitome of the khukuri as a weapon grade up to now!!!! :D

No doubt it can do some serious damage and is pretty damned quick, too. Also, easy to hang onto. It's got some big pluses, for sure.

Swede the search isn't turning anything up for me either, at least for any pix. Sorry.
Oh wait!!!!
There's probably a pic of it somewhere in the khonvention pix I posted.
I will look in a little while.....

My take on the self-defence thingy:

Lopping off heads and other extremities is provably possible with a khukuri of sufficient size and balance - it's done regularly at BirGorkha, in the process of blood sacrifice.

However, I'd bet my life that a 1/4" deep cut would be more than sufficient to reduce almost any intruder to a sniveling heap, assuming they got past the psychology of the glittering blade in the first place. Behind practically every living being is an overpowering sense of self-preservation.

In light of this, I'd reccommend either a really big klonker of a khukuri for scare factor, or something extremely light for speed. And in either case, pray that A: your assailant isn't packing heat, and B: that you've got a good lawyer.

from 15" on up are capable of serious dismemberment. The concept of using one for home defense is mostly wishful thinking, at least down here. Terminology changes, but illegal entry into an occupied residence is becoming known as "home invasion" more and more in our legal circles. For years, the state of North Carolina has had a category of "aggravated burglary" for this act, and it has carried the death penalty if the violator was armed upon entry. Home invasion has become more and more common, to the point where several states followed the lead of South Carolina, and declared "open season" on perpetrators. Most of these goblins are dopers, looking for an all-out hit on a home for all they can get ("one-stop shopping"). A firearm is probably the best bet for these situations, but the case nearest the SC Atty. General's declaration (it happened just before or just after - CRS) was a 72-year-old gentleman who killed an intruder with a CSA Cavalry saber, from his mantle. Maybe a Khuk isn't so far out, after all:D

You would probably need an attorney, but just for a 5-10 minute trial. There were many states who decided that use of deadly force wasn't justified to defend property, but the visciousness of many of the home invasion cases has just about reversed that.

Humm. Up Northerlywards, you'd be looking at jail time almost without question, and possibly a court order against ever owning another knife over 3" ever again. Just a guess, mind you.

It's a kind of small pic, but shows up nicely, and you're exactly right!!!! They are very Awesome Khukuris!!!!
And even more so in the hand.:D

Rust in at least one incident it has been proven that it doesn't even take a 1/4" cut to send a punk wielding a POS knife running for his life in pure terror after pissing his pants in extreme fright.  :D
However that's not always the results of showing off a really small khukuri.:(

"In light of this, I'd recommend either a really big klonker of a khukuri for scare factor, or something extremely light for speed. And in either case, pray that A: your assailant isn't packing heat, and B: that you've got a good lawyer."

Very good points indeed. Falls back on my saying, "What are you willing to give up to get what you want?":)

...correct for "Up Northerwards", and for several states down our way as well. Some cases, even in states that still protect the perp in preference to the victim, are settled by the investigating officers. The prosecutors are handed a police report which shows justified use of force, self defense, or whatever. The most ambious prosecutor knows when he (A) won't get police cooperation if he indicts, and (B) may be forced to change his residence if public opinion goes against him. A case here several years ago involved a burglar surprised by the return of an elderly female homeowner. As he was fleeing, gun in one hand and a pillowcase of goodies in the other, she caught him in the legs with a couple of loads of birdshot. As liberal as Kentucky is on firearms and self defense, you are not allowed to shoot a fleeing attacker, unless he is clearly a danger to the public. And, "clearly" is undefined, except in cases of extreme violence on the perp's part. The responding deputies decided they couldn't determine WHEN the burglars's gun had been fired (it was general knowledge that it went off when the "shot hit the man") and several neighbors were prepared to swear that the man stood in the yard and fired first. That is an ambitious politician's time to sign the reports and go back to scheming. A CCDW applicant in one of my classes shot an invader in her home while he was firing at her from down the hall that led to her bedroom. He ruined a headboard and some plaster - she removed the top 1/3 of his kidney. From the front :D Her's was a classic, fully justifiable use of deadly force. The comedic sheriff added that he recieved just punishment (extreme pain and surgery) and also found religion - he fled, and the deputies found him curled up in the weeds in a field, calling out "Jesus, save me". He was saved for 30, no parole. While there is a perfect one now and again, ost aren't that clean or easy.
