Self Defense Khukuri

Well heres my .02 cents

A phone would work best for self defense, along with a good pair of running shoes :D Seriously I personally would not wish to use deadly force if necessary at this point in my life. There usually are so many other options out there. Anyways to me the only time deadly force would be necessary a khukri would not be my first choice, but instead a good ol .45 or maybe a 12 guage.

Just a few points to clarify. First of all, many thanks to you all.

I agree that firearms are superior to sharp pointy things. I might even have a couple myself. :D There are times, however, when having a firearm isn't always possible. In my case, I have a couple of toddlers who are getting very curious and mobile. I know that there are good locks, safes, etc., I just like the idea of sleeping with a security blanket/khukuri...

When asking the question, I was referring more to the "performance orientation" of the model of the khukuri. The answer that I am afraid of is, "They will all do that." While that might be true, I want to know which ones do it BEST. There might be times that we are camping or in a place where I have a knife, but no gun.

I realize that I didn't put that all in my original question, so I thought I better explain a little more.

My sympathy to those of you that live in less enlightened areas. Here in Colorado, we have a law that was nicknamed "Make My Day". In short, if someone is on your property, and you have reasonable cause to worry that they are going to hurt you, you can hurt them! It keeps the bad guys worried, which is how it should be!

I think a load of buckshot in the butt is a very nice way of saying, "Thanks for dropping by!"

My wife likes to say that I'm a 90's kind of guy -- 1890's!

In fact, I met her earlier than that :)
My original answer dealt with first impressions, but to pinpoint it more closely, the Malla is the best weapon, IMHO. The blade drops slightly more than it's close cousins, making it a heavy chopper for its' weight, and giving it much more potential for deep draw cuts. It is heavy enough to cut very deeply, straight and pointed enough to allow thrusts, and well balanced for switches to reverse grip if necessary - although it is hard to envision the necessity. The GS is right behind it, but lighter and not dropped as much. These are disadvantages, compared to the Malla IMO.

Just focusing in :)

I find it disturbing that you actually have to worry about going to prison for defending your home. I guess I need to read up on the law.
If you come home and find someone in your house who isnt supposed to be there, how are you supposed to know if he is going or coming or if he is armed or not? In my opinion it shouldnt matter, the fact that he is in your home to begin with should be enough.
I realize that this is not what this thread was meant to discuss but after reading over some of these post I realized I had no idea what the law in my area was. In a situation where you have suprised an intruder in your home if you hesitate even for a moment to worry about if you are going to jail or not it could very well cost you your life. It makes me sick to think you could be prosecuted.

You are 10,000% correct, and absolutely normal in your feelings (around here, anyhoo).

Randy,

don't worry about the thread going off topic, I do it all the time too! Besides, I love reading these responses. Here's what I think should go through people's minds:

Good guy: Let's see, on my way home, I pick up Junior, get a loaf of bread, and roses for my wife.

Bad guy: Is this guy going to shoot me, or gut me like a fish? Will I wake up tomorrow? Hmmm.... Maybe it's time to find a different line of work!

Ok back to the khukris :D If you really want to know which one perfoms the best buy one of each and find out for yourself :p;)
Realistically I always find knife choice to be extremely personal, and depends largely on what your used to, what training you have, and your physical aptitude. My personal favourite is an 18" WWII, though a 12" Ang khola is pretty handy. Then again I also like blades with heft to them. I like the added weight, you may not be able to swingem around as much as a lighter blade, but when you do them cuts are gonna be mean :D Though if I had to go into a fight with a blade I would probably use my kalis tulid or barong.

By the way Uncle any news on that barong model BA is working on?

I'll throw in my .02 too (I'm just falling asleep at the computer anyway)...

My first response would be my Ashley :D:D:D... but, since there are only TWO of those and Dave has her twin Jewel, then I guess it isn't the best recommendation (It is REALLY BUGGING YOU Tsimi isn't it... you don't have one of the two :p :p :p )...

Sooo, that brings me to my newest khuk... a YCS! The fullered blade really lightens up the blade, so you have both big and light. The design (thanks Yvsa) is excellent, and it is fancy enough to take out to dinner, but mean enough to escort you home.

I have a 25" Kobra... excellent for a short sword; an 18" Suripati, nice but too big in my opinion. I still like the YCS...

And welcome to the cantina!!!

BTW... it doesn't really matter which khuk you get... after the first one, you'll just end up buying more :D. HIKV Ho!!!!

As AC has stated above I particularly like my Jewel.
Just the right weight to length ratio for a carry Kukhri, along with alot of attitude.:)

My opinion on the type of khukuri is that it really is going to be a matter of personal preference and comfort. I just picked up a 16.5inch WW2from a friend and love the feel of this knife to me it would be an excellent self defense weapon.

I just recently became interseted in Khukuris and was amazed at the choping power of these blades. No matter what type of defense an intruder throws in its way say like a hand or an arm he is going to lose it. Most knives do not have one shot stopping power, that can not be said about khukuris. A solid strike from one of these blades will end the fight.

It is also my opinion ( and I am sure many will disagree with it) that for SOME PEOPLE a khukuri would make a better home defense weapon
than a firearm. Whithout practice a gun can be dificult to handle. In a stressful situation such as an attack by an intruder, a knife can be a much more natural weapon, allmost an extension of your hand. A gun would be preferable provided you have it available, its loaded, and you know how to use it. There is a diference between shooting a gun once in a while and being able to use one in a situation where you are under attack. I know I could not wake up from a dead sleep and be able to defend myself with a gun, simply because I have had no training on how to do so. On the other hand I have had edged weapon training and am more comfortable with a knife under my pillow. I admit a gun has the decisive reach advantage but would be willing to bet that a khukuri has the same stopping power as some handguns.

I didnt mean for this post to be so long. I guess what I am trying to say is that allmost any quality khukuri would make an excellent weapon provided you were comfortable using it.

Randy -

I've been a shooter now for over 54 years, and have no idea how many hundreds of thousands of rounds of practice I've put in. I have absolute confidence in my chosen weapon, and my ability to use it.

That said, since I have had a Khukuri in the house, there has been one on the nightstand next to the gun. My first instinct, I believe, would be to grab the Khukri, strike as I'm rising from bed, and finish on the backswing, if "inappropriately aroused". There is a confidence there resembling kinship. I don't know whether it comes from the genes or from the blade - probably one recognizing something in the other, but it ain't mysticism - it's real.

Cold Steel Assegai spear or Bad Axe. It'll do the job on vermin and not deprive you of he use and inspiration of your precious HI's.

I will have to look for the post about the khukuri brawl.
There is no doubt in my mind in the abillity of one of these blades to remove a hand or any limb for that matter.
