Just don't exceed the legal limit for length for your area. It seems like from the letter of the law in my state that any length is ok as long as it's not concealed, but I've heard varying things cops here say "4 inches" or "if they put it across their palm and it's longer, it gets taken up" and I asked one and he said "any knife was a deadly weapon"! I guess just stay out of trouble  Personally I just carry my 4" wharncliffe, and can draw it quicker than any goober can dig for his switchblade. I don't figure having a big dagger would make me much safer in a knife-defense situation. Maybe would keep someone from wanting to attack me... or maybe make them want to hassle me.

I'd not make it so long that it'll snag on stuff/get in the way and you won't want to wear it, or anything hard to draw/use in a pinch.
Or maybe make a knife, sell it, and buy a gun. :)

I'd say get something that doesn't break laws or look "mean" so that in the aftermath of a bad night you don't have to go through legal attacks too. Also carry it so it is comfortable AND accessable. Comfort so you will carry it and accessable so you can reach it fast. A three or four incher will go a long way in close quarters and will be easy to carry and easy to hide. Of course bigger is better if you can make it work for you :) A folder will work too but personally I like a fixed blade for self defense carry. If you can, find some near you get a bit of training too. A good teacher could get you a lot of info in just a lesson or two. Maybe trade a knife for the skills :D Keep it simple and practice :)

Here ya go, it comes as a kit, for $120.00 from Dixie Gun Works. If you can put together a knife, you can put together a gun kit. :D
Then you'll be almost as cool as Bruce! :D

A bargain at on $120 I'd say.
I wonder how the blade and barrel is joined together? Welded? Do you have one of these?

Bruce, sadly I do not own one yet... however I believe it is forged as one piece blade/trigger/handguard (stamped more than likely)

Redrummd a blue quartz inlay in some gray aged hardwood would be AWESOME!

I generally carry a fixed blade for utility, and I also carry a spyderco Millie. I don't think anyone in their right mind would jump someone with two knives out in the open, But my millie makes me feel safe. Someone broke into the car of a co-worker of my mother and I so I may get her a spydie civilian for Christmas to make her feel better.

I'd say that a any knife between 3-5" so more that enough to fend off a few people. I think once you pull out the knife, and they that they could get hurt they will run like the cowards they are.

nope. he did not want anything. just wanted to know if the bus went up to the city. he had just got out of the hospitle. he showed me his coler bone and man did it look like it was painful, also all the stitches in his ear looked bad. nice guy, he just moved to utah thats why he was not famular with the buses.

Sad to hear of his troubles, then.

I wondered if it was legit because we used to have a lowlife cruising the 'hood trying to panhandle because he "had been rolled and was trying to get train fare back to Chicago".
A month later he was cruising the 'hood with the same story again. He could have crawled to Chicago by then.:rolleyes:

I wondered if it was the same scam, as if it came out of a panhandlers' guide or something.

One time around Christmas a lady pulled up next to me at the gas station and asked for $5 for some gas, because she was almost out or some such. I told her I couldn't really, but then she'd said she was the asst. manager up at the wal-mart garden department (I'm a horticulture major so that's partly why I agreed), and my school was right next to there, so I reluctantly agreed. Well, no such lady worked there, and I never heard about it further. The next summer, I was in my front yard shooting a rattlesnake, when lo and behold, the same blue truck pulls up. She calls me over, and starts talking about the same story (I forget the details). I was like "Lady, you scammed me last year, you better get out of here now before I call the cops." She stammered for a couple seconds as she sped off. That was almost worth $5:D

I was at the gas staion with my wife and noticed a guy going from one pearson to another asking for money. I reconived him from asking me for change in the past. He started heading my way and before he had a chance to talk I asked him if he could help me out with some change. He looked confused than handed me $0.45 I thought it was funny, but my wife said it was mean.

If possible carry what your local police use, goes for gun or knife. That way if you do kill someone it's easier to defend in court.I would hate to hear what a DA would have to say about that Dixie knife-gun kit. They would have you painted as a vigilante just looking for trouble.

I believe any self defense knife should be double edged, it allows you to cut either way, which can be a real plus when your wrestling with someone. I love the Cold Steel push daggers, allot of blade in a small package and double edged, of course look at your local laws since they are outlawed some places.

my 2 cents... Go double edged I personally like SOG's Pentagon; inexpensive combo edged for multiple cutting options, good penetration. If local statutes prohibit DE blades go recurve to max out your head speed on slashes and get more penetration on stabs once your past the plane of resistance of the swell. after all recurve blades are nothing more than half a wasp-waisted one. I carry a Kershaw Ken Onion S30V Blur w/ recurve blade. But I also carry a WSK which is a show-stopper for sure :D
God I love living in the mountains!

Addendum: Learn the anatomy of the human body:
Brachial, Radial, Subclavian, Femoral,(arteries) Top of head, Liver, Heart, Lung, Corotid, eyes. Speed and training make almost any knife the best defense knife.:)
