Self defense reccommendations?

A few random thoughts...

I used to carry a little emergency fire extinguisher to many events and activities. Great for cooling all kinds of emergencies.

Is it possible to develop a drinking habit and carry a heavy stein or mug everywhere?

Ongoing science projects, history dioramas, other constructed projects can cover a multitude of raw material being carried back and forth.

Take up the flute. There is a wonderful innocuous looking clear lexan tube flute that is rather impervious to the dings and knocks of life. Can't remember where I saw that.

Perpetually carry a bouquet of NOT thornless roses.....

Clipboard!

Carry your spike shoes slung over your shoulder...

Baseball bat and ball, hockey stick, lacrosse stick, set of steel horseshoes and stakes, golfclubs, bowling ball, tennis racquette,

hive of bees or hornet nest for show and tell...

Join the drama club, tools for scenery might have to be carried back and forth.

Astronomy club, telescope can be carted back and forth? Another ongoing project building a home made scope of rather durable goods.

Chess club. Work on your own set of pieces like in Shawshank Redemption, using a rock hammer? Or just carry rock, bronze or glass set with considerable heft.

Lunch box, custom job along similar lines to the clipboard above or to the vandal-proff mailboxes.

Here's my list for someone restricted from carrying real weapons:

1. Mini-Maglight in pocket-use as palmstick
2. Mini-Maglight in backpack- (more for use as a flashlight)
3. Carabiner- can be useful for palm strikes and as a palm stick
4. Pepper Spray substitute- take a few 35mm film cannisters and fill them with cayanne pepper and flour. Throw the poweder into the attacker's eyes.

Train. I have a few Martial arts I could recommend, for this kind of thing I'd have to recommend Judo, even after a few months it can be very effective. If you can't take it up, then maybe join the school wrestling team? Do both? Know anyone into Judo, Wrestling or boxing? As for carrying something for SD. Your not carrying anything for it. Kubotans are used to find your keys in your pocket, Flashlights are for light, Steel toed boots are to protect your feet, a bic lighter is a tool, that chain is part of your "style". See where I'm getting at?

I think this belongs in practical tactical.

I see a lot of talk about pepper spray and it's advocates. I am an instructor and have been sprayed on purpose about six times and by accident about 25 times on the street. It is a very poor weapon for a spontanious attack since it requires complex motor skills to employed and you have to worry about blowback. It is not a nice thing to see OC melt someones contacts to their eyes when they are on your side. A weapon carried to protect you from a spontanious attack needs to be in the hand whenever possible or at least when danger is anticipated. Any Surefire is the best bet. Immediatly light them and strike them then run away and gain distance. If you are knocked to the ground and can not get away it is time to pull a blade...or a firearm if you have one. Within arms distance I will take the blade.

Do you have any links to articles on this? I'm not saying this is not true but I have never heard of this. If it is true that is a big problem if you wear contacts and carry pepper spray. Everything I've read (mostly from manufacturers and police) as well as my conversations with police said that it was safe. In the early 1990s manufactureers said it would work on anyone even if they were drunk, on drugs, or psychotic but there have been cases of it failing against those types.

I agree a blade and firearm are better choices but they aren't options for the topic of this thread.

Happened to a guy on my team during an arrest. That is good enough for me. And never underestimate a Kubaton. But a flashlight works just as well.

I've trained in the eta-koppo and have a couple but prefer the Mini-Maglight since it works as well as a "real" eta-koppo, is not a weapon, and helps to see in the dark which a regular eta-koppo won't do.

I'd look at one of the solid metal LED flashlights (like the CMG Infinity [ultra] /ARC AA) on a lanyard. Half the length of a minimag, it can be used in a similar fashion to a sling with a rock in it.

Remember also that your best weapon is your wits.
