Self defense Sword

I would use the Cold Steel Small Sword (rapier), but I am a fencer and very skilled in the use of this type of weapon. If you are not a fencer then you might just want a cut-and-slash blade like the Cold Steel Wakizashi.

To be perfectly candid, in the UK, with the laws the way they are, I would opt for a non-lethal tool such as a Sjambok. I have several and they are extremely effective at de-motivating a would-be attacker. I have used mine on 4 seperate occasions, 3 on humans, and once on a black bear. In all 4 instances, the attacks were immedeatly terminated and the attackers fled rapidly. And no one was killed or seriously hurt (depends on what you call serious....they make nasty whelps). The learning curve is minimal.

How does one use a longer sword from the hip if tackled?
Short shorts, long daggers, etc. would seem more appropriate to home defense of most mass built homes sized.

Batons can 'impact' a bladed weapon out of a persons hands as well and/or break a wrist.
Courts would probably look more favorably on broken wrist and skulls than severed limbs and scalping's.

And if going for a weapon that requires training, why not a Tonfa.
A hardened Tonfa will stop a blade, protect your arm/vitals and can be used with crushing force.

OP has not posted in a while. Still looking at a 'sword'?

Get a cricket bat and cut some 1/8"W x 1/4" or so deep grooves down the sides. Then get some 15" or 20" planer blades from a woodworking shop and epoxy them in. Use the 24hr sort of epoxy. You will then have not only an impact weapon, but one that cuts as well.

PLaner Blades

You then have a improvised maquahuitl (Aztec war club).

a nice counter balanced steel handled ravens beaked war hammer used as a fireplace poker or even a fireplace poker would have a good affect on an intruder.

I would get a Kris Cutlery Gladius, Its strong very well made for the price, and definitely suited for close quarters combat, I`ve had one for years and for that price you are getting a great weapon

one thought I had was that the wall hanger sword might be more favorable in the eyes of the law than a sword kept elsewhere. If it's a "display" piece you happened to pick up in a time of need (just like the golf club mentioned earlier) you should be much better off than say "opening the safe to get my sword" or something that makes it out in such a way that you had it waiting for use on a home defender.

Thank you, for your advice. I have decided on Buying a Cold Steel 1796 Light Cavalry Sabre,

After reading this review. http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/british-military-swords.html
I always wanted of these sabres, but had great doubts about the quality of Cold Steel products. I understand that Cold Steel outsourcers the manufacturing of their products, and that therefore the quality greatly varies.

But after reading the review, I am more confident that this is a good buy. Or does any of you recommend other similar sabres from different brands?

I wish that I had discovered this forum sooner, I have learned so much in such a short time.

I would say as a defensive weapon, any of the roman short swords would do quite nicely. Any weapon your going to defend against with a sword will be something that will result with the perp being in close contact, and your not going to be in a wide open space to make good use of a longer blade. Sure a katana will part bone and flesh as if you were cutting water, but in halways and through doors you don't have the room.

:eek:I can't believe what I'm reading."Home defence is against the law in England"What are you supposed to do against burglars?Givem' a hand?I thought Jersey was bad.

The suggestion of the Cold steel Assagai was a good one, plus I would also consider one of Cold Steel's newer machetes- an 18 inch bowie, spear point or sax blade should prove to be efficent in close quarters, and as a machete-it is a tool--plus look at their city stick and their new propylene indian clubs, walking stick, etc

Cold steel is generally good. I've bought a couple of things that were not up to snuff, i.e. poorly made grip on a couple of swords, but they were real good about letting me send the item back and get a new one.

I would say go for the cavalry sabre. Either that or a Turkish Shamsir...essentially the same style... UK's laws on self-defense are ridiculous. In Pennsylvania if we catch you stealing something from our house or you pose a threat we have every right to end your life by whatever means possible...within the confines of the house.. i keep a shortsword and a double barrel 8 guage for self defense. tell me that wont do damage
