self defense

OK Peter,

To get serious for a moment (this is my rifle... this is my gun...) I carry a fatty SHBA in a Behind-The-Belt rig tha Dwayne and I cooked up. That rig is sooo comfortable and pulls the knife in so tight it doesn't even print under a tee shirt. Trying to get one to work for a NO, but for >5" blades this thing is better than sliced bread.:D

Rob

You had better get a pic up of that set up Rob! :D

Nope. The intent of my post was not to draw traffic away from here or to imply that you all were incompetant. My point was simply to point out that there are places other than this, with Busse addicts, that have good info, pertaining to the real world use of Busses in a variety of applications that might be helpful.

If my presenting alternative sources of information offended any of you, please accept my deepest and most heart felt apologies.

You sure didn't offend me Les. I know what you meant and you are right there are several other places to post for serious input on this topic. I suggest that Peter pose this same question on all forums so as to get the broadest amount of information possible. This thread did get off track though didn't it? :D I tried to get it back though.

Thanks guys, yeah I should have known better than to consult with some of you oinkers about this... you guys never leave the safety of your INFI compuonds long enough to risk any confrontations ;)

I actually had a confrontation the other day with a guy listed at the DOJ as a violent offender, threats and such have followed... I am prepared, just like to get other input on the subject.

Amongst other things I plan on making a rig for my Buffalo Soldier... I think it is pretty good for the job and a nice size overall... it may get swapped with an INFIcoot, or similar knife... or combo of things, maybe even a Baby Browning...unfortunately not INFI, who knows.

Bottom line is that I am a guy who has NEVER done anything to envite harm but it seems to have found me anyway.:grumpy:

Peter,

That sucks! You better watch yourself real close my friend. You might consider a little ballistic protection while you are at it.

If you are expecting a confrontation, by all means get something that goes bang and regulate the knife to back-up duty, unless you have training in that area. I have waay more experience with my Colt than any blade and that's what I would reach for first in a up close and personal situation. Good luck with this slimeball.

PETER

I had an OnScene sheath for...well it ain't no Busse and it ain't no Rat so it doesn't much matter, but it was a 4" blade. I had the sheath on my belt, on left side (I'm a lefty) and upside down. Even with a jacket on this makes for a supper fast draw (doesn't get caught up), and is something to consider if you think it's really neccesary to have a knife handy for SD.

As for what to carry, well, it doesn't have to be Busse or INFI because in the end it's just for cutting and stabbing to keep you alive. But, whatever you choose make sure it's large enough to do some damage and small enough that you can draw and manouver it quickly. The difference between a large blade that you can't deploy and a small one that you can, may be priceless. But whatever you choose, do keep it sharp, always.

Some guys will say not to use a knife, or rely on one unless you have training. I say, if you think you can use it, it's better than not having it. I don't have any knife fighting training, but I feel very comfortable with a knife and would rather have one on me than a gun (as I have no experience at all with guns) or most othe weapons I can think of, if I new I'd need it for SD.

Violence is the first option, but should be the last resort. Try running first. Hope this helps.

Matt

I could be wrong about the whole knife fighting idea... don't you sort of use the sharp pointy parts to inflict damage? How much training do you guys think you need????

Just kidding, and yes I do actually have some formal training with sharp objects, as well as the kind that launch projectiles, and a few other more random things as well... call it the small redhead who got picked on way too much in school complex. Strangely I have never had to use any of these skills, well none but the attitude anyway. I consider myself fairly lucky.

Right. Now that we're back on track, I will resist the temptation to draw the attention back to Les's pink chinchilla lined loin cloth.

Cheers,
BJB :D

good god you oinks! is it cause i had the first sh1 mounted on a wilson presidential or cause i have the first ad being mounted on a s&w j frame?

shape up you oinkers! remember it's the first hog to the trough and there will be NO REGRETS OR GET YOUR FAT ASS OUT!!

Progunner

That rig is back at Dwaynes for a little tweaking, so perhaps he can get a pic up. Gotta remember it was sort of a concept thing, basicly sticking the knife through (behind) the belt like a Bowie except much more horizontal where the majority of the blade rides behind the belt with the handle above and about 1 1/2" sticking out below. Dwayne came up with a 'saddle' type loop that works perfect as it lets everything find it's own level. Really ingenious on his part.

Peter

Well, if you've had the training, just make sure whatever you have is with you. Something else to consider. Could you get a hold of a heavy cane? Won't draw attention and makes a helluva weapon. Hickory would be nice. It also lulls your opponent into thinking you're not as mobile as you are. Remember The Avengers and that guys umbrella? Just a thought.

Here is my two cents on the sd issue. I work with mucho $ in cash and tend to always be looking over my shoulder at my job. for me I love the AS in its kydex, but I also carry a super small KAHR 9mm(recomended by a Depty Sheriff buddy) with a 7 shot clip. It ran me $600 with 2 clips and a leather clip-on and the pistol permit was $30. Its so lightweight and compact that you can't see it clipped onto my shorts and under my t-shirt. Trust me, with that combo I defintly feel much more comfortable. It's all a close up and personal combo, but if it ever went down thats what I'd need close up and personal.

now you're talking! remember clips are strippers and go in rifles and assorted pistols, magazine are inserted in whole, holder and the ammo together.
now in regards to strippers and wholes... you are very wise not to take a knife to a gun fight!
remember that clint eastwood movie where he strapped a blade to his ankle and stuck that bad ass in his thigh?
later on he blew the sob off the dock of the bay like ottis redding and tossed his badges in the wawa!!
good movie!!!

nice pistola you have, don't leave home with out it!

pps: i carry the busse triple grind folder for my backup! :D

Well my real take is to avoid any confrontation as much as possible... problem is this guy is the 'ex' of my girlfriend who holds a big grudge because they did not have anywhere near the relationship we do/did. there are also kids involved, his, and it is also ovious they love and respect me a lot... also making him mad. I think it is a real pity that he can't enjoy the ida of a good guy in his kids life rather than another loser... but then this guy is an alchaholic, a DOJ violent offender, and for most of the year an unemployed deadbeat.... not too hard to outshine this guy!

Anyway, I try to be understanding, and will avoid a fight whenever possible, but if it is a choice of who will remain horizontal, I will do what I can to be the one left standing.

OK now back to the fun talk about knives.... :D

iether a 3 1/2 foot long spanish ratchet knife,

or the busse machete :D

heheheheheheheheheeee......

i had someone pose me a question that he always posed himself about knife fighting, similar to my "end of the world knife", his was "worst case scenario knife fight". if you have a guy who's been in prison for 6 years, lifting wieghts constantly, who's insane, and a serious violent offender, TOTALLY whacked out on pcp, and he comes after you with a knife, what do you do? according to him, most guys like that will basically slash or stab repeatedly, but will do it very, very fast, and with a pretty good amount of power. and if he's on pcp, most anything you do to hurt him wont matter.

his resonse, one that i respect completely, is a good karembit, ala the crk&t bearclaw. while it does take training to overcome such a situation (without freezing), and knowing what to target, if you have even a general idea of what to go for, you can come out at not dead, with a little luck and skill. if you dont have the tendons or muscles to pull the body part how you want, you cant use that body part.

and my whole hearted best wishes. hopefully if it does ever escelate, it will be harmless.

Run, or go straight for the throat. Once you stick a knife behind someone's windpipe and pull it out the front, I don't think they count as a threat anymore. Yeah, you might get hurt doing it, but hurt is better than dead.

Sounds harsh but if a guy like you described comes at me, I'd try my first suggestion if I think I can make it, if not then it's option number 2.
