Just saw this and figured I'd throw in my honest opinion of the HEST. I always liked the basic profile of the knife so wanted to try it. Controversy with the owner of the company aside. I figured I'd buy it and give it an honest shot. Very disappointed overall.
I've got the one with the Sliepner steel. From what I understand those were limited in number so you'd think the quality control would be a little bit better. On mine the lock bar is so sticky it sometimes has to be pried loose in order to close the knife. once the lock bar does break free, it takes gorilla like strength to slide the bar over far enough to clear the tang. Do it a couple times and it will leave marks/bruises. The blade came from the factory with a very dull edge. That can be remedied but to me it's another indication of poor QC.
I think that is the problem with these things, the overall design isn't bad but the execution is. Apparently no one is checking these things very thoroughly before they're released into the wild. They seem to be hit or miss. While some are spot on, others get lemons. Unfortunately I got the latter.
From what I've read on various forums, the customer service is pretty good but you shouldn't have to regularly send a knife back to correct something that should have been taken care of before it left the factory. Especially for one that cost a couple hundred bucks or more.
Yes I'm sure they probably would take care of it if I do send it back and one of these days I will, but I work nights and sleep all day. It's a pain in the ass for me to make the effort to box it up, take the ride to the post office, etc. . .
