Hi all,
I need advice as to what I should or should not do regarding several instances of sellers saying that the item is sold to me and then backing out, Part of the territory I guess? However my most recent incident has pushed me to reconsider buying and selling here on Bladeforums, honor seems to be disappearing. At this point I will not mention the seller but I will give you all details so you can give me advise on how to proceed. A couple of days ago I came across a knife on the for sale section. It was a knife I had always wanted because of the maker, and the sellers price was good. I contacted the seller and waited a couple of days by which time another knife had come my way, so I had to let the seller know funds were tight. I thought about that knife all night and in the morning decided to sell one of my knives to a friend to purchase this knife. I never asked the seller or committed to a sale at that point. However upon sale of the knife I contacted the BF member to inquire if the knife as still available and he contacted me that the knife is still for sale and mine if I want it. I write back that I do want it, and seller agrees, I let the seller know that I have to step out for the evening, but will make payment as soon as I return home. Upon returning home I find there emails from the seller stating he had misidentified the model of the knife, do I still want it. I respond yes. Then the seller contacts me and says he is not sure about selling it and will contact me if it comes back up for sale. I did not know why but something did not ring true and I remembered the seller had this item for sale on several other forums, and sure enough after a quick check I see the seller has indeed sold the same knife to another individual AFTER our emails and his promise to let me know. I emailed the seller and called him on this one of his lines being " this is a comedy of errors" and so on. Seller offered me money for my trouble, but at this point I hate being lied to. I cannot not see how any of this was a series of mistakes, when the seller knew I wanted the knife, knew I had gone out for the evening with a promise to pay him when I got home, and sold the knife AFTER our correspondence.

What do I do, just walk away? Where is a persons word for sale? Any help would be appreciated, I have all correspondences with he seller saved, as well I saved all the info from the site the seller sold the knife on. All I want is the knife I was told was mine!

You should keep looking for your knife, just don't attempt to buy anything from that seller.
Obviously he is a liar and I would consider him untrustworthy to deal with.
He lied to you once, what's stopping him from doing something worse next time?

You asked for advise, so I'll give you my opinion. This isn't a problem isolated to Bladeforums. I only bring that up because you mentioned reconsidering doing business here. I have actually found the folks here on Bladeforums to be a good group, for the most part. That's both buyers and sellers.

Times are a changing, as they say. A mans word doesn't hold the same value to some. You're going to experience this anywhere you go. I sold a Tige Wake Board boat a few years ago. It was listed for a very good price because I needed the cash fast. After I promised a sale, to a man in a different state, I received a call from someone locally offering me $5000 more to sell it to him. Damn, for a split second I thought about it. I could have used that extra cash. But your word is your word. So it went to the guy out of state. There are people like us still out there. Don't judge everyone by the actions of a few.

The only other opinion I have from your post is that you should have paid as soon as you had the deal. how long does it take to transfer cash these days? Seconds? You can eliminate the chance that someone is going to sell it out from under you.

I agree I wish I had paid right then and there, but with a 2 year old, a 4 month old and an angry wife all waiting (we were already late:o) I dared not use the computer any further.

What really gets me are the lies, blatant ones, because I dont think the seller ever thought I might have checked other forums. And then he goes on to portray himself as innocent but "stupid" in all this, and this guy is actively selling on Bladeforums right now. I know there are lots of folks out there whom are honest but it is hard for me to be lied to, and to know that the seller is still out there selling his wares.

Sigh.

I have had excellent success buying and selling on this Forum ... though, yes, there have been occasional problems with certain individuals. Individuals I will no longer do business with.

As has been said up-stream, this is hardly a problem with BladeForums. I, too, believe this is a general shift in our society; a shift away from the old attitude of "a man's word is his bond" and towards a much more flexible interpretation of honor and honesty.

Can't say I'm comfortable with that, but then I was born into an older and different world.:o I do try to change with the times, but not in this instance. And I don't recommend that anyone else make this particular shift.

So. Do not give up on BladeForums -- this is a good, solid place. But do be much more careful and guarded about doing these little bits of business. Get it in writing, move money quickly and carefully, and use these feedback sub-forums always. When unsure, consult with the mods and old heads around here ... folks like Esav or Bastid (and even Cougar!!).

I'm almost certain somebody famous once said, "I feel your pain." I do ... we do. Hang in there, stay steady, and you will succeed.:)

And you are right, Bladeforums in this case was merely the vehicle this seller used to lie on, feigning how horrible he felt, why lie about the sale of the knife if you feel so horrible????

That's the question nobody but the seller can answer. That's the man he has to see every time he looks in the mirror. Sometimes that's punishment enough. Just be glad you're not him.
