Hello,

My long time friend is on a short leave from Afghanistan. He came over for a BBQ my family had for him and after a few beers and some grub he wanted to check out my knives. As soon as he looked at the Becker bk9 he said " now thats a knife". Hes not a knife guy like most of us but hes starting to become one. Anyways he said the bk9 would be awesome but he would like it 2" shorter!!!!! Showed him a bk7 and he was in love. So my family and I are going to send him one when he goes back. Im going to make him a kydex sheath with molle locks and make some tan g10 or micarta scales. I also wanted to send him a few other things other then the bk7. What else should I send with it???

Thanks,

Chris

It depends on what their individual PX is short of, but one of the most requested items is drink mixes, evidently the water dosen't always taste that good. Entertainment items like magazines and dvd's are pretty popular also.
Just about anything that helps pass the time in hot weather would probably hit the spot right now. Think how much deodorant they must be going through (or wish they were anyway). One item I always like to send to infantry guys is the gel shoe insoles, those seem to go over very well.

On a similar/related note - what's the cheapest way to ship the items?

I have a bunch of jiu-jitsu/grappling DVDs to send a friend in afghanistan.

Just regular US postal if it's going to an APO. I just sent a soldier a package this week. Priority mail only cost me $7.90.
On the what else... I think multi-tools are always good to go. Send him a Leatherman or SOG to go with that BK-9. Heck, if you're doing kydex, you could piggyback it.

Just make sure you you put his APO and not the city/country. It could get mixed in with their mail and he will likely never receive it. In Iraq, we like jerky, glade air freshener (non plug in), drink mixes, we can usually get new movies for like $2 so save your money on those, make a mixed CD of new music, ummm, personally i get 2 decks of cards 2 packs of cough drops with every care package and no longer have an room for more, just a thought.
