SERE 2000 review

I don't know the website but Jeff Randall says the contact information for River City Sheaths is Mike Sastre at VideoSAS@aol.com. Hope this helps.

I just got my SERE 2000 today. The craftsmanship used to make this knife is better than that of many customs costing 3 or 4x as much money. I just compared this knife to large Sebenza and I think it is easily comparable in terms of finish. This has got to be the best Al Mar knife since the 1980s. The thickness of the stainless steel liners ought to enable this knife to last forever. I should note that the clipis shiny but it rides ultra low and it is reversable.

The only drawback I see is that some people may feel the blade is a bit short. I say it is closer the 3.5 than 3.6". For most people that is plenty, but some folks like them closer to 4." Still I think that in terms of size, the knife is comparable a large Sebenza or Spyderco Wegner. Finally, I have to mention that the edge on this knife is razor sharp.

I am glad you like it Anthony. I hope people don't think that myself or Art are trying to overhype this knife, but I agree with you that the quality is better than alot of customs. I am going to order another one to put up. As tough as this knife is I expect it will last a long time, but I would like to have a NIB example for my collection. It isn't often that a knife of this quality comes around, especially at this price. I will probably order a drawpoint sheath for mine also.

I like what I'm hearing and will order one tonight. Is the Sere too thick for iwb? does it open smoothly? Does it take up a lot of space when carried in rf pocket?(some knivea carried in rfp scrape my hand when I reach in my pocket for something). Also noticed it weighs 6ozs (does it feel heavy for daily carry?). thanks Mike

I personally find IWB uncomfortable with almost all knives. Probably because of my belly

. It is fairly thick. It would be uncortable to me, but I dont carry my knives that way. I would go to this thread http://pub2.ezboard.com/flivesayknivesclosequarterscombat.showMessage?topicID=250.topic and ask Jerry Van Cook he is the tactical expert who does the review of the S2K in the aforementioned thread.

Very smooth, smoother than alot of customs I have.

It doesn't take up alot of space, but it does ride very, very low. I don't carry anything in the same pocket as my knife (wouldn't want keys or change to scratch my knife

)

It doesn't feel too heavy to me, but you know its there. A little reassuring to me. Keep in mind that I am used to having about 20+ lbs of equipment on me.

As much as I love this knife I know it isn't for everyone, no knife is. I haven't talked to anyone who has one that doesn't like it. Personally this knife is as close to perfect as I have seen.

Hey Shootist, ditto and ditto!

Art Sigmon

P.S. will be looking for my second SERE this weekend at the Charlotte show.

Mike,

I asked Jerry VanCook your questions and here is his response:

"Dennis,
All of your questions (which I guess were really the other guy's questions) boil down to personal opinion. But I'll give you mine: 1)No, I don't think the SERE is too thich for IWB carry. But keep in mind that I'm used to carrying pistols (including some like 4" S&W 629s) this way, also carrying bowie knives inside the pants. 2) Yes, it opens VERY smoothly, 3) Carried in the pocket, it rides very deep and may, therefore, take up more actual space inside the pocket. It is lower profile this way but a little harder to draw. (Not much with practice.) But hey, everything in life is always a trade-off, right? 4) No, it doesn't seem heavy to me but see #1 again.
Thanks,
JVC "

I called my dealer to order another one and he said he wasn't sure if he could get another. He was out and thought his supplier was backordered. I am looking for another source for one if anyone knows of any.

Whoops. I guess that probably is your source, reading back. They told me they were shipping Friday. You might want to check back with them.

Knife outlet cant get any in either

I did manage to find someone that sold me a numbered first production run. It is #087 of 200. I figured since this one is getting put up anyway might as well get a numbered one. Apparently the S2K is getting scarce. Gary wasn't kidding when he said he thought they would be in a backorder situation. The S2K must be selling very well. veryone I know that has one loves it, but it doesn't seem to be getting the attention that some lesser quality knives do. I wonder if it would get more hype if it were a Benchmade or a Microtech? I cant wait til the SERE Operator is available.

Well Dennis I too had some good luck. At the Charlotte show today I was able to trade for another SERE 2000 to put up and keep in pristine shape. The dealer I purchased from indicated that he now had a steady flow of these. I will include his name and address at the end of this message for anyone in search of this fine knife.

Dealer address;

I have seen this dealer at numerous shows and really believe him to be a reputable dealer. Hope this helps anyone looking but not finding. BTW he carries a lot of high end factory and custom tacticals.

Well I got my SERE 2000 today from Fred at the Knife Outlet. I have to say that this is a damn nice knife. All the reports seem accurate and though I have yet to cut anything it is very sharp out of the box.

The action is smooth with a tight lock up and it is a hefty feeling piece.

The pocket clip makes the knife ride very deep in the pocket and I am glad I made the impulsive decision to get this.

Dennis and Jeff---you two guys are the culprit and how sweet it is!

I can understand why these knives are gettig hard to find.

I'll report more later after some cutt'n.

What's the lock do when you stick the blade into a car tire and wiggle the handle back and forth? That'll tell ya' if the lock is up to snuff.

Thanks!

Steve when I stuck the knife in my neighbor's tracker trailer tire the knife held up well. I didn't really wiggle it back and forth since I was really PO'd at my neighbor and just wanted to slash his tire. In fact, his porch light went on while I was doing it and I had to run away before I got caught. Almost damn near left my knife in the tire...heheheh....silly me.

One negative I notice with this knife is that the thick liners are somewhat sharp and probably could have used a bit more polishing. Anyone else notice this? I am thinking of sanding them down a bit with some 600 grit paper. Other than that I find that this knife is living up to my expectation. Fit and finish is very nice but not as good as the Sebenza. For a production knife it is above average that is for sure.

Any comments on the liners or is it just mine?

Kodiak, thats just precision Japanese milling that gives a sharp edge. In reality I hadn't noticed that until you mentioned it. For my hand it is not a problem, but it could be for someone else. No its not a Sebrenza but you could pick up 3 SERE's for 1 Sebrenza. Thats one to use, one to look at, and one to leave in your neighbors truck tire!

On the other post, the manuals are made by Al-Mar in their factory in Japan. The auto's have a blade ground by Al-Mar ( I think) but are put together by Paragon. I really do not intend for this to sound like I am poor mouthing Paragon, quess I am though, but the auto SERE and auto SERT are both auto CRAP. Buy a Microtech SOCOM Elite auto for less money and have a real knife! Oh well, thats all I have to say about that.

Thanks,
Art Sigmon
