what is the most important on a serious but small survival package for store as reserve in the hollow handle of a knife?

Small fire steel fish hooks & some line some spark lite tinder a few wooden matches & striker wrapped in foil a few split shot. I dont know which knife you have but this fits in a Randall #18 attack-survival knife.

this is what I have in my hollow handle, I could add a few more things a signaling item is probably next on the list.

a buddy of mine has a "desert survival package":
3 cigarettes
6 strike anywhere matches

not much more you need that can fit in the handle when you're lost in the desert.

Doesn't it matter where you're gonna go with your survival kit? Like Wayfarer says, you won't be using those fishing lines/sinkers/hooks in the desert...

light weight fishing line could be used to close a wound. or help build a shelter from the sun ferro rod for flame can get cold even in the desert at night hooks and line could also be used for traps or snares birds, snakes, lizards,

What did you use to make that ferro striker/speer head
from. very neat idea

Hacksaw blade with some dremel work. I broke that one trying to jam it through a heavy duty plastic container. The next one I make will be out of a jigsaw blade, they are a bit more heavy duty with a better wood saw on it.

good eye ashtxsniper.

I would be interested in making fire first. I don't carry a hollow-handle knife in the woods anymore and I just have this one for fun and for demonstrations of what could be carried.

I have a fishing kit in mine along with needles and spark-lite tinder. So much more could be added but again, I have mine just for show and fun.

just a FWIW , if you would have used a shatter proof blade for your spear head , it may well have lasted longer .

The ordinary ones are kinda brittle and snap easy .

Great idea tho

I will look into that, I just used what I had on hand and I think it was a cheapo dollar store blade.

I always try and look for items that can be used for more than one thing. You could make a pretty useful tool out of a hacksaw blade with some more thought. (eg. ferro striker, spearhead and maybe a flathead screw driver or even a trigger for a trap).

What did you do to seal off the pieces of straw?

Like that idea for carrying iodine tablets and tinder.

Thanks,

Charles

Just take a lighter and melt the end. Then take a pair of pliers to "crimp" them shut while they are still hot. Works like a charm.
