I'd take both with plain edges, unless there were some special parameter dictating the serrations. For me, serrations are specialized characteristics - more of a liability than an asset on a general-use knife.

Deepens on the use. I'd prefer the folder with combo edge, and fixed pain with serrations on the back like the SOG Seal Pup Elite.

I don't have much use for serrations. I prefer the look of PE as well. However if I could get a dagger with PE on one side and serrations on the other, well that would be pretty much set I would think.

Unless I'm cutting rope, cardboard or bread, I prefer plain edge knives exclusively. Probably in survival situation I would take one of each.

Plain edge only, I can't sharpen serrations on my stones, and I don't like having a knife that I can't sharpen. In a survival situation, I would assume there would be rocks around that could be used in a pinch to scrape and edge back onto a blade. I have a travel policy, where I don't go anywhere that doesn't have rocks.... so I should be all set.

Ok, I think it's safe to assume at this point that most people here care not for serrations. Thank you all for your input on this.

Plain edges look better to me each day, but I have to admit that the CS serrations not only make many cutting jobs easy, they're easy to sharpen. But like I said earlier, not all serrations are the same. Course serrations don't cut rope better, they cut it worse. They only help if you need to cut down a small branch or fibrous plant. The CS serrations actually cut paper straight and maintain their edges for phenomenally long times. I suspect they'd outlast a plain edge made of S30V or some other super steel. When I do need to resharpen them, it takes me less than 20 minutes and I can do it while I watch TV.

The finer the serrations, the better. I do love the way a few swipes across some ceramic stones will sharpen an AUS8 plain edge knife. Putting a good edge on a super steel takes much more time and effort. Me no like.

I am a PE guy, but just bought 2 SE knives. The first is an Endura wave, which I have heard has shallower serrations than most and doesn't snag much. For a SD oriented knife I think it will work great, plus for EDC tasks the extra edge retention will be nice. The other knife I bought that is SE is a Civilian for my dad. That is one wicked ass SD blade that he is going to carry, as he lives in a higher crime area and can't get a comcealed carry permit. Now he will have something that does some SERIOUS damage in a last ditch SD situation.

I have a few knives with serrations but don't buy then any more. I really don't think they do any cutting job better than a plain edge including rope.

when I was a kid I liked serrations, probably because I hadn't a clue as to how to sharpen a blade, now I prefer plain edges.

I think serrations have thier place, but not in a majority of my EDC use.
