Seven Sebbies

Hey Mark,

Just wondering what your daily rotation has become since you purchased that new mammoth bark ladder damascus sebby. Are you planning on shipping one of the others out to fit it in to your daily rotation, or do you not just alternate between the 8 you have now?

It has indeed got a bit complicated since I had the original idea, to be honest. I didn't stick to my plans very well, that's for sure. First off, I had money in PayPal from selling camping stuff and that ended up in my owning two Micarta knives as the shop I found which accepted PayPal only had that one available, making eight knives. So I had the idea then of seven carry knives and a desk knife. Last month, I had the opportunity to buy back a Unique Graphic one I owned a few years ago so I went for that too, making nine. I've fancied the Ladder pattern Damasteel as I didn't have any with that design and I couldn't get over looking at that Mammoth Ivory one so I got it last week, bringing the total to ten.

So at the moment, the Unique graphic and the S30V Micarta are really unused. The Ladder one is my desk knife and the other original Seven Sebbies are still being rotated daily - along with a small plain Classic as my full-time pocket knife which I put into use when I retired my James Barber slipjoint.

That's it, I think...... Phew :D

Wow! Well if that's not a Chronic Sebenzaholic, I don't know what is :D

lol, that is awesome! enjoy those knives.

i can't wait to see that stand in use. it looks like it is coming along pretty good.

I got some more work done on the Sebenza stand this weekend. The final piece of the building, before sanding and varnishing, was to attach the two knife platforms to the base. It would have been just about impossible to do freehand and end up with anything level so I spent most of yesterday designing a way to hold the exact heights and width of the platforms and also make it handy to work with - I mean moving both pieces about and getting them easily back into place.

First, I cable tied the two rows which will keep the width right, then I fitted three pieces of wood to mark where the base sits. Finally, I made up two larger blocks of wood on both side of the stand at the height I wanted the platform and added four stoppers there to always have the platform sitting proper, hovering over the base. It looks weird but it has left me free to concentrate on the woodwork without having to stop time and again to check if everything is in place correctly -

Then, after finishing that mount, I made the eights sections (Pieces C shown red in the picture, post.10, above) Today, I got the parts assembled today. It looks like a mess with all the extra bits like the jig, cable ties, clamps and club hammers :o

Anyway, I promised to photograph the steps so here goes. First, the eight pieces shown cut to size. Then, when they were glued and dowelled, fitted into place -

That's the assembly all finished. My next job is sanding everything down and to apply maybe three of four coats of clear gloss yacht varnish.

Cheers,

Mark

That stand is going to look so good with all your sebenzas in there! Cant wait for the final pictures! You are keeping us all on our toes!

An early update because I won't be showing anything more for a good while as I'll be varnishing. Here' s a couple of pictures of my Sebenza stand as it is now, free of all that clutter in the earlier pictures. I have to sand everything done and give it a general clean-up yet but, although it looks like something out of Star Trek sitting up on the columns like this, it'll give you a rough idea of the final shape -

All being well I'll soon get the three or four coats on it. Then it'll be ready for the knives and placing out on the desk.

Any updates on this? Can't wait to see it all finished and loaded with sebs.

I nearly missed your question, sorry peanuts :o

I've only been at it a few times since, to be honest. Sanding & varnishing is a slow business anyway and I only get at it for a couple of hours every weekend, in-between other things I'm doing. But I have put on two coats of clear gloss yacht varnish so far and it's closing in nicely. I reckon four coats will have it properly finished.

The only 'trouble' is that my idea of Seven Sebbies has grew to fourteen since I started! That's definitely my limit (well, until I see another nice one maybe) as they will nearly fill both rows now on the stand - not my original plan
