Severely underrated knives

Depends on whom is doing the rating. The same knife can be both overrated, and underrated.

I believe that the Spyderco Military is VERY underrated. Maybe written-off would be a better expression?

People make a big deal about the fact that it has a…
Liner lock, tip down right hand only clip and more knife shows when clipped in the pocket than people like.

Here is why it is great…

-Fantastically comfortable in any grip
-Incredibly easy to open and close
-Fidget factor (for those that care)
-High performance cutter
-Can be used easily with gloves
-Carries small for its large size
-9.5” at 4.2oz = .44oz/inch
-Plenty strong for any knife task
-It was available in lots of steels, colors and materials
-Tip down clip (works better for a knife of this length). Grab and pull it by the exposed pivot area and the knife swings into your palm placing your thumb right on the hole
-Due to this exposed pivot area, less pocket lint accumulates in the lock face
-Due to the exposed pivot area there is plenty area to purchase when drawing the knife with this gloves. Try that with a deep carry clip.
-Liner lock is tried and true and the millie has THE best production liner lock
-high performance cutter
-high performance cutter
-high performance cutter
-Its even available in a lefty version
-Its the father of the PM, PM2 and Para 3

To some this will be great and to some this will be bad… They are updating it to the Military 2 addressing the common complaints (lock and clip orientation)

Im sure I can go on and on and on..

Here is the only true negatives…

The standard version is about $220. While I think its the one of best knives out there, it hasn’t stopped me but it pains me to pay $220 for one. I remember when they were like $165ish. Its not really available right now. Even though Sal and Eric say its going to be made along side Military 2 for a while, they are hard to find right now. I think they are letting all of the stock run out to create a demand for the M2.

kershaw leek in 14c28n - great slicer - great steel - great price
I finally got one a couple months ago and am surprised how much I like it. If it weren’t assisted and if they’d make a handle with some grip, I think I’d buy more of them. But it’s like having a giant xacto blade with you.

I’ll throw in the Harnds Wind here as a budget option. For the price, you get 14c28n and great fit and finish. Not much heard of but could pass for CEO style.

If anything, I think the military is overrated and every point you made aside from the oal is subjective, not objective. I couldn’t get over the awful blade to handle ratio. Still, you make me want to try one again.

Any knife that uses a good quality standard steel blade that gets the job done just fine but is not labeled as a super steel.

Not sure what the problem is there. I carried one in the field for several years, and it was only replaced because I needed a knife with a serrated edge. The handle is large enough so the knife can be easily handled even with heavy gloves. The blade is long to be useful for most anything you'd encounter in the real world, and at 3.5" it would be legal to carry in most places. Clip orientation is just right if you have gloves on also.

The knife the is talking about had a 4 inch blade and a 5.5 inch handle.

LOL...I have my old Military right in front of me.......cutting edge, 3.5", handle 5.5".....just right for people who actually get their hands and knives dirty....You don't need a 5" blade for most mundane tasks, but you do need enough handle when wearing gloves. Numbers mean little without real world context.

A lot of knives out of the Scrapyard camp. I don’t think they can be beat for the price to performance ratio.

Numbers may mean little if you just make them up as you go along. It is a 4 inch blade with a 3.69 inch cutting edge. I wear a size large glove and 5.5 inches is excessive.

You might want to look again......again, reality vs something somebody saw on the internet......LOL.....
Sure looks like 3 1/2" to me.....and well within the legal limits.

What sort of glove? Never had an issue with either a tight fitting XL Wells Lamont type leather glove or the generic $2 box store type that is general issue at most employers. Better to have a longer handle than a handle thats too short.

The Harnds Talisman remains my favorite of their knives. I got one of the older models in AUS-8, probably before Civivi was a thing. It totally blew me away for the $30 or whatever it cost. They've since upgraded to 14C28N with a price of around $40. It's definitely worth checking out if anyone is looking for a full-sized budget folder with good ergonomics and sweet action.

That’s not how Spyderco or law enforcement measures blade length. You are really reaching here

Where I live both legal length and what is measured are specifically defined by this part of Title 53, Section 53-206a-

Any person who carries upon his or her person any BB. gun, blackjack, metal or brass knuckles, or any dirk knife, or any switch knife, or any knife having an automatic spring release device by which a blade is released from the handle, having a blade of over one and one-half inches in length, or stiletto, or any knife the edged portion of the blade of which is four inches or more in length, any police baton or nightstick, or any martial arts weapon or electronic defense weapon, as defined in section 53a-3, or any other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument, shall be guilty of a class E felony.

You might want to read up on knife laws.....

I don't know what any of this has to do with handle to blade ratio or anything else.....
I don't see it as a problem unless somebody is more hung up on numbers than function....

Your state may be an exception or you may have left out part of the statute but in almost every place where knives are regulated by length, they measure from the end of the handle to the tip of the blade. Your state probably will too.

D DMG

%37.2 of OAL of paramilitary 2 is cutting edge

%38.8 of overall length of a Military is cutting edge.

Most people think the PM2 is a great knife and its ratio is basically the same

As far as weight goes, divide weight by OAL and you get

Paramilitary 2 = .453oz/inch of OAL
Military = .442oz/inch of OAL

I respect your opinion. The great thing about our hobby is that there is something for everyone. I felt the same way as you about the ration of blade to handle when I bought a PM2 and when I bought the Millie. After I carried them a bit it didnt matter and I realized it was just an aesthetic thing. I thought it didnt look right, but after I gave it a chance and carried and used it, I realized it was a non issue.
