Severely underrated knives

To accurately measure cutting edge one would need to include the curvature. As an example, lay a string along the edge, following the curve, and then mark the string at the tip and choil. Straighten it out and measure the measure distance between the marks.

From a LEO/legal perspective, that is not how knives are measured.

Doing it that way even a 2" serrated blade would be an illegal deadly weapon.....
No dog in this fight but from a LEO perspective, many (most?) jurisdictions measure from the tip of the blade to the start of the handle/scales (not just the cutting edge). So, yes - that measurement should also include the ricasso.

Better illustrated here:
No, again, thats a broad generalization. Did you read my post above that actually quotes the law where I live?
Not sure what the above picture is for but whatever it is, it is not how the blade length is legally measured. Read this old Bladeforums thread on this very topic.

EDIT: shane45-1911 shane45-1911 beat me.
13 year old Blade Forum posts are irrelevant and do not reflect any legal reality. Laws are different from state to state and change all the time. The law in my state is pretty specific about measurements. Did you read any of the above posts? Just in case you didn't bother, here it is again.....
Any person who carries upon his or her person any BB. gun, blackjack, metal or brass knuckles, or any dirk knife, or any switch knife, or any knife having an automatic spring release device by which a blade is released from the handle, having a blade of over one and one-half inches in length, or stiletto, or any knife the edged portion of the blade of which is four inches or more in length, any police baton or nightstick, or any martial arts weapon or electronic defense weapon, as defined in section 53a-3, or any other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument, shall be guilty of a class E felony.

Note the bold part where it says "edged portion of the blade"......that would be vs a combination of both the edge and non-edged portions of the blade, and not the entire blade from handle to point.....That is how its done here.

OK - then feel free to carry that 3.5" military. I pointed it out just in case other folks who are not familiar with this subject just blindly follow your (or your state's) way of measuring the legal length of knives and possibly get them into troubles. Most states as far as I know measure it differently from yours.

Hey, guess what? All this talk about legal length is annoying. This is a thread about underrated knives, not knife laws. Imagine that instead of putting in time and energy to snipe about that here, you instead did something to help Knife Rights in their efforts to get rid of such ludicrous and ultimately dangerous laws.

I have seen underrated and overrated brands but here I just wanted to pull together a list of severely underrated knives regardless of price. Heres a few:

Everyone has opinions on flagship Spyderco models like the PM2, Para 3, Shaman but not enough time is spent on how good the Sage 5 is. Both standard and LW models.

Civivi has a lot of models that gets a lot of play with their Praxis, various button locks, etc but a discontinued model that still gets pocket time for me is the Incite. It is just so thin behind the edge and has an arguably more comfortable handle than the praxis.

I also want to bring up the Benchmade Presidio 2 fullsize. I really wish someone would come out with some aftermarket scales so I can really take it to the next level with micarta and make a perfect hard use knife but it really gets skipped over in their lineup with all the love going to the Griptillian, Bugout, Bailout, and Osborn series of knives.

Feel free to drop your underrated knives even those that aren't from well known makers. Fixed blades, traditionals, and autos welcome!
BPS Knives in Ukraine. I've bought two of the 1066 steel hidden tang blanks from them. They don't charge a lot for their knives and I think that gives people the impression the quality isn't there. It is.

Tramontina knives. I've owned a few of their commercial grade ones with the textured moulded plastic handles. Nice and grippy when wet. The steel they use is the same as Victorinox, but I feel the Tramontinas hold an edge just a little bit better. Great working knives. A bit cheaper than Victorinox. I have a Tramontina boning knife that I've used to fillet many, many fish. Holds an edge for a very reasonable amount of time and is very easy to get frighteningly sharp. I had a 10" chef's knife from them that I gave to a friend and he loves it.

I have long supported Doug Ritter and Kniferights.org

Ha, to each his own 😀

I was actually going to chime in that the 0456 is one of my favorite underrepresented ZTs. Good utility blade shape, decent steel, and hell for stout. The downside is the massively heavy handle. I sorta see it as if we were remaking Robocop, but Murphy is played by the Kershaw Needs Work and OCP resurrects him as an 0456.

I will go to my grave proclaiming that the Zt 0909 is one of the most underrepresented and criminally discontinued folders. Everything about it worked and landed itself to being a great work/camp knife. Killing it off started to sour me on the ZT pocket jewelry they started to focus on after that.
I'm a big fan of Les George's "signature" blade shape. It took me a bit to warm up to it aesthetically, but it is supremely functional. My VECP is my go to heavy duty folder.

Morakniv
Mora knives are dirt cheap, while that may be so
I'm always surprised at the abuse they take, not even partial tang, and completely machine made they perform like machines.

I will throw out the ZT 0707, acknowledging that this kind of thing is largely personal preference. That knife has never gotten much love because it came out at a time when dropping shut was a big deal for a lot of people, as well as a smooth gliding action overall.

That knife is definitely not that, though that is a necessity of the design. I can really lean on the lock bar and it will still flip reliably, which was the goal. It also uses thin stock and is thin behind the edge, lots of taper, stubby tip. Not the hard use design that a lot of people expect from ZT but delightful for those of us who prefer slicyness over choppiness. Great cutting edge to OAL ratio, light, disappears in a pocket, well built. I carry one of these pretty often.

Maybe someone can answer this for me, I own the morakniv companion, companion heavy duty, basic in stainless, pro s, even garberg and they have a collection of small holes reminiscent of "pitting" on the sides of the blade, by the label and on the other side as well, sometimes they are all consistent, usually not.

they are all going to be used and abused so I'm not upset per se, but does anyone know what I speak of? Before you ask, not set up for picture taking
Maybe if you have a couple moras play with some light, and see if you can find something

I'll throw in a vote for the Vosteed Nightshade.

Always been a fan of the Shilin Cutter and leaf blades in general, ever since the old Lum designed Spydercos introduced me to the style. Considering that those are hen's teeth now, and there's not really much on the market to choose from, this blade fills a niche. Fox recently put out the "Vox Chillin F8", which plays in the same sandbox, but is over twice as expensive and boasts M398 steel, which I have absolutely no use for.

No waggle components, but really solid F&F on everything, and nothing overly cheaped out on.
Super slicey 154cm blade, G10, caged ceramic bearings, skeletonized liners. No sharp spots, everything contoured and pleasant.
Snappy action, drop shutty, time-tested proven design.

The cutter is a food prep beast, and great in the garden. Just a really pleasant utility blade.

$70 is a very fair price point for the package. I'm just really happy with mine, and it sees quite a bit of use.

Morakniv knives
had a helle eggen in Sandvik 12C27, 125.00 it did pretty decent on a multi year season wood, but then I took out a morakniv bushcraft in forest green, the stainless model and it just.. obliterated the wood, bit in deep and took out gouges without any damage to the edge. Just, phenomenal, moraknivs heat treatment,
