Because it was refinished by the end user or a third party.

Used and abused, my butt.

I got this one used to begin with, then I Scotch-brited it myself after about 2-3 years of carry to even out the original wear. Then I carried it for another 2-3 years as you see above before I moved on to something else. It got used plenty by at least two users. :)

This ZT 0566 has been used heavily, dropped, kicked, and stepped on. Use has been many hundreds of yards of cardboard cutting, numerous plastic binding wraps, straps, etc. Abused? Eeehhhhh... Not really. I use it without concern, but I'm not out trying to baton petrified wood or mix concrete with it. I also make it a point to close and pocket the knife between uses. I wear 5.11 Stryke pants most days, so the knife is typically riding clipped to the right front slash pocket instead of a normal front pocket. I think this has probably prevented a lot of impacts.

Thanks to edge maintenance, the worst damage is gone-- I had to work out edge damage from blowing through a dense plastic seal strap and smacking concrete. There are two drop scars on it, but you have to have it in hand to notice. One is on the top of the pocket clip (as defined by the knife being open and tip down). The other is in like with the lock side 'top down' pocket clip holes near the ricasso when the blade is open.

I think I would have to be intentional to really hurt it.

Since sharpening it, it looks great, with only clip wear and a dirty cord fob.

Indeed! But she sure looks different from when she was issued - the knife, I mean :) But boy do age and beauty go well together!

Yup. When I inherited the knife, it was in bad shape. I tore it down, stacked a new leather handle, ground some of the belly out, and gave it some cold blue. It was a Cattaraugus 225Q... now it's mine.

I have the same knife, you don't see too many with the old cross and the bale. It is probably my most used knife because I have had it the longest. My most valuable knife as well, because it was the first knife my dad gave me, and he passed away last year.

onojoe your old SAK Pioneer looks good . I have carried mine a lot as well . It was not a gift from my father though . As a matter of fact I can't even remember where I got it . Most likely at a flea market for a couple of dollars . They're great EDCs  and you're right about not seeing very many of them . Your's is the first other one like it I've seen .

Certainly used hard, but not really abused:

Spyderco Superleaf helped me trim braches for several hours. Still sharp enough to glide through twine and slice receipt paper.

A few passes on a strop and it was popping hair again.

Nothing wrong with VG-10!
