That is absolutely true. I'm not familiar with any cutlery steel manufacturers north of the wall, the reason I had this made is because almost all the ones available to buy are tourist tat.
.
I was speaking with BRKT a while ago with an enquiry and they told me that they had a stag shortage issue.
Import and/or Export Restrictions
If you want to shoot one it'll cost you about £10 a head. Hunters take note and come visit the Western Isles!

Drinking in a pub at 15?! naughty naughty!
Aye, it's a pity Scotland has a massive supply of stag antlers available and because the tourists buy it, it gets used for all manner of crap. A real shame. I was speaking with BRKT a while ago with an enquiry and they told me that they had a stag shortage issue. The island where I live sees approx 5000 stags and 10000 hinds culled each year because they can't be controlled. If you want to shoot one it'll cost you about £10 a head. I can understand that for export abroad but for within the UK? How come Sheffield can't get ahold of Scottish stag antlers? Seems odd. Maybe we should start a business Jack.....![]()
I really can't understand it Paul, a couple of cutlers are currently using camel bone instead (looks very nice I have to say), including Trevor Ablett. Plenty of local stag here, and you'd think there would be business arrangments going back decades. Maybe there is an international element, and they can get a higher price for it elsewhere in Europe.
Maybe none of the stag suppliers want their lovely 'product' going on a hideous Sheffield knife!![]()
I expected you are right in it being sold for a better price abroad.
