This has been my idea ever since the announcement of the ASH1 release. I am going to rework a ASH1 into something close to the original SH1. I finally got somewhat settled into the new home and my shop is partly setup. I have some 3/8" black linen micarta to make the hand shaped scales from. I bought a regular and magnum handle ASH1 to see which I liked better. I decided to use the regular handle one on the project because the magnum has the extra meat on them to alter later if I want, plus they do feel better. Here are the first pictures:

ASH1 handle comparison:

Scales removed, this is "U26" maybe it stands for "Urban coat, #26".

Stripping the coating off.

Here is the stripped ASH1 and a SH1, the finish on the ASH1 under the paint is a dead ringer for the finish on the SH1!

.

I added the top thumb ramp and a little reprofiling of the top.

Handle layout for the black linen scales.

Front and aft end of scales shaped and glued onto blade.

Unclamped and ready to shape

Rough shaping of scales

More shaping, getting closer........

.

.

I spent a few more hours rounding all the edges and contours, so here are a few more pictures.

Here are a few comparison pictures.

Here is the SH1, rehandled ASH and a Mag handle ASH.

Lookin good already.

Great to see that every ASH-1 is super smooth below the coating.

Good stuff.

Hey if it doesn't work out can you trim it down to a Badger for me?

Can't wait to see how it turns out.

You leaving the 3 fasteners... or drilling new holes so you'll have two?

Get busy Grinducci... I wanna see this thing! :D

I'll be using two smooth bolts and in the same place like the original.

Looking good Tim! Can't wait for the finishing result:thumbup:

Tim very cool bro!!! I can't get over how smooth these fat boys are under the finish.

Dang!!! Dang!!! I wish I wasn't so broke, I'd buy at least 2 more of em. Oh well, maybe by the time Skunk has them I'll have the dough to buy another one for a project.

Thanks again Tim....keep us posted bro!:D

I really like that thumb-divot that was used on the SH1 and SFNO. Now that I see it in comparison, I wish the ASH-1 had it. :(

My question is: How are you going to fill and redrill the lanyard hole? LOL

I will be adding in the thumb-divot and the "Hump" on the top profile. I can't duplicate the large plunge grind and I'm leaving the lanyard hole in the ASH1 location. I suppose I could weld it up and redrill, but that would be alot of work and I'm not trying to make the ASH1 exactly like the original, just close. :D

A few added progress pictures to the second post.
