First off, thanks to Andy and the crew at FBF as well as our customers.

Seeing as most of our good ideas seem to spring from customer input, we'd like to ask the folks here what they would like to see come from the laminate mines.

Colors, materials, dyes, combos of colors and materials, glow dust etc. . .

We can sometimes find a good selection of burlap in colors. Not sure what other colors you'd like to see.

When we can't find the right color material, we have been producing some interesting laminates using some pigments

For instance:
wide weave coffebag plus wine colored pigment = drunken coffeebag
emerald burlap plus black pigment = evergreen burlap

So let us know what you think would be cool

Thanks,

Dylan and Todd

P.S.

Here is what we are currently sending FBF:

It's Black and White and has no name. So give it one!

Sapphire

Emerald

Evergreen

Coffeebag

Drunken Coffeebag

Tomato

Premium Natural

Cool thread guys - I'd love to see: a lighter wide weave tan burlap, as well as purple, maroon, or maybe a lighter version of coffee bag (not sure if this is possible).

Robin Egg Blue .. and some more military hues of OD green, Sand, Light Browns.

I was thinking OD or foliage as well; without needing to be on tactical knife, these are still cool colors!

Hi Dylan and Todd,

I was really digging the firehose that you guys were selling recently. That has to look cool on a knife!

First off, love the Evergreen Burlap!

Here's another for OD. My current favorite handle color combo is OD over white and natural spacers. Would love some OD colored Burlap to add to my canvas and linen collection.

The Evergreen is fantastic! I would like to see a wider range of blue and maybe a foliage color.

Hi Fod,

I am a huge fan of your work. I am lucky enough to own several of the knives that you have pictured above. It is a powerful combination to have two artistic craftsman meld there products together like you and Andy do.

I like every color & burlap variation that I have. I think that the wider weave burlaps have a more unique artsy look. I really like the coffee bag version when it capture the green and/or red streaks in places. I love the rich color of the drunken coffee bag. I love the brightness of the Emerald Green and Sapphire Blue. I don't have an Evergreen yet, but that is on the top of my wish list.

Going forward I would like to see more coarser weaves with contrasting color highlights. I was curious about how the red white & blue layered combo that you made before and how it looked on a finished knife. If that looked good, maybe a similar melded (not laminated) green and light brown pigment combo would look good. Either that or alternating layers of Emerald Green and Coffeebag burlap might look awesome. Chocolate brown pigment over white sounds good also.

In response to: "It's Black and White and has no name. So give it one!" My name suggestion for the black and white one is "Night Spiderweb." I can't tell you how many times I have walked on a dark night only to come within inches of walking into spiderweb that reflects some starlight at the last second to alert me.

Thanks for making a great product.

Phil

We'll work on a purple!!!!!:D I have not found one I like yet but then again I am not a big fan of purple. Darker colors are sometime hard to predict.

Thanks.
In general, we use two types of coffeebags. Wide weave and not so wide weave. The wide weave are plain with subdued markings. We often add wine color to it and is then called drunken. The not so wide weave bags we center cut out the logo when we gut the bags for a more colorful knife handle. Like the one you recently purchased :D

Robin Egg Blue .. and some more military hues of OD green, Sand, Light Browns.

Thanks,
Lighter or darker than sapphire?

We've done some cool browns. . .Brass and Terra Cotta. We had a great fabric supplier but they went under so some of these colors are hit and miss now, like Tomato.

Thank you!

Evergreen is a winner and one of my favorites just now

More love for OD. We'll look for some.

Hi Dylan and Todd,

We can't wait to see it on a knife. Dylan called GEC last we and they said it was on a knife but not finished. We'd love to find some newer/cleaner hose with some stripes or markings on it.

The Evergreen is fantastic! I would like to see a wider range of blue and maybe a foliage color.

More Evergreen love, very cool.

Lighter or darker blues?

Foliage?

Nightshade?

meh;)

Phil

Thank you for the kind words Phil. It is great to work with Andy and the knife industry in general. After a history in manufacturing little pieces and parts that got shipped off, it is especially gratifying for me to see a product put into its end use by happy customers.

First see my explanation regarding coffeebags to xxwjtxx above

We supply two types of burlap to Fiddleback Forge. Rustic and Premium. In general, Premium is the single color stuff with a consistent almost open canvas look-emerald, tomato, natural. The exception is Evergreen (emerald with black pigment). The rustic also come in colors but we treat the epoxy with pigments when using these fabrics. Sapphire and B&W are rustic and colored examples.

The R-W-B was OK. it kinda drifted to purple in the middle but was still cool. I really liked the tequila sunrise, but not so much on a FBF knife.

Those are some good color combos to consider. Midnight Spiderweb?

Thanks again.

Thanks everyone, please keep the ideas and questions coming.

Keep in mind we can get a variety of fabric and pigment colors. For instance we could make yellow burlap with pink pigment. It would be ugly as sin but we could do it. I'm sure you guys can do better than some of my combos.;)

I'm surprised noone brought up glow in the dark options.

Have you ever tried black burlap w/ yellow, orange or bright green resin? Thanks, great topic I love it.

Midnight spiderweb sounds good.

Material idea : 3M ScotchBrite sanding pads in different colors with other color epoxy embedded :).

Just to off shoot this topic a little, what is the best way to care for/ condition this type of handle material? After a little usage, mine has become faded in spots and feels rougher than when I first got it from the shop. Just wondering if there is a way to restore its luster if I wanted. I've tried mineral oil and obenauf's with our success. Once it dries it fades. Thanks,

Call it 'Oreo'. looks like a bunch of rows of oreos. keeps with your food names too.

I love your 'electric Orange' stuff. I'd like to see a few others with the same kind of 'vividness' that those have. Almost neon in coloring. They age beautifully too

I forgot about the "Electric Orange." The photos that I have seen of that material look very good, although we don't see many anymore.

You didn't ask for opinions about this, but I think "Ruby" sounds better than "Tomato." It also fits the gem theme of the brighter colored versions (i.e. Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby.)

Brass and Terra Cotta.

I like that idea a lot. Could make for some very nice bolsters.

Another good one.

That could be real cool too, and I would think make for a very strong handle material.

If it helps, we finish them by hand sanding - 220, 400 grits, then use black followed by white scotch brite pads, and then wax the handles. I wouldn't recommend using sandpaper on them again, but you could certainly bring back the luster with just the scotch brite pads. Just be careful of the blade because they will scratch it.
