Shadetree Suggestions

If it helps, we finish them by hand sanding - 220, 400 grits, then use black followed by white scotch brite pads, and then wax the handles. I wouldn't recommend using sandpaper on them again, but you could certainly bring back the luster with just the scotch brite pads. Just be careful of the blade because they will scratch it.

What kind of wax do you guys use on the handles? Is this used in all the composite handles? or just burlap?

Every handle gets waxed with a furniture grade paste wax, or something similar. It wears off pretty quickly with handling but I think it gives a good additional micro layer of protection. And maybe helps delay moisture transfer if the knife ships to a different climate?

Yellow...or dirty yellow.

Have you ever tried black burlap w/ yellow, orange or bright green resin? Thanks, great topic I love it.
I'll try to dig up some pics of the whites and yellows we have done. I like em.

In my experience, black is not as cool as expected. It lacks visual interest and any added pigments are lost. I suggest you are better off using black canvas/G10, if you want black. The tactile difference may be desirable but I must question if it is worth the cost increase.

Midnight spiderweb sounds good.

Material idea : 3M ScotchBrite sanding pads in different colors with other color epoxy embedded :).

Cool. We have made a few tries at sponges. It'll be cool once we dial it in, but nothing worthy of leaving the shop just yet. We''ll add the scotchbrite to this project. Got any worn out belts you can send us Ken?

Call it 'Oreo'. looks like a bunch of rows of oreos. keeps with your food names too.

I love your 'electric Orange' stuff. I'd like to see a few others with the same kind of 'vividness' that those have. Almost neon in coloring. They age beautifully too

We did two "electrics" an orange and a green. We sent a half sheet of each to Andy. He used it but did not order more. It is a "premium" burlap with 2% metallic threads woven in. We can get it in a red also.

OREO is the front runner

I forgot about the "Electric Orange." The photos that I have seen of that material look very good, although we don't see many anymore.

You didn't ask for opinions about this, but I think "Ruby" sounds better than "Tomato." It also fits the gem theme of the brighter colored versions (i.e. Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby.)

Phil

Yup it should be Ruby.

Can you do a three tones of green, coyote brown, and khaki tan mixed up together for a match to multi-cam ? :)

My Camp Nessie is one with Electric Orange with the metallic thread. I think it's pretty cool. I don't think any of my pics of it show off the thread very well. I'll try to get a better shot of it.

Check this blast from the past (wow almost 5 years!). It does a good job of showing our process as well as Andy and I's early deals:

Please do. Thanks!

If anyone has one in green please post a pic of it!

Clearly I need to dig through old threads more often :) > I like the camo man, and I bet it would look even better with Andy's contours than tappered down to a hilt. Cool, I will have to remember this as I now want a 5/32 tapered O-1 Sneaky Pete with with camo burlap :)

This still doesn't do it justice. Sorry about the lack of camera equipment and skills.

Is it possible to make handles out of old woodland camp army surplus material? That could be cool.

That is very helpful Thanks!

It is but does not turn out as cool as expected. :grumpy:

Most camo are printed, so what you have is a layer of material with a relatively thin layer of color on it. When laid up the the predominant color is the base material with a touch of camo colors at the contour lines.

We are working on a new process that should work well with prints and patterns.

Some things from the past. Hopefully this will spur some more imagination.

I don't know if it is possible from a production perspective, but I think that bumblebee would be really cool done width-wise instead of length-wise. In other words, so the stripes were perpendicular to the blade so the stripes showed on the sides of the scales. Does that make sense?

It does Michael, good idea. It can be done but I doubt it is production feasible. To lay up a sheet 1-1/2" thick is problematic and would be not cheap. . .but I have done it. . . and the customer re handled it shortly after I sent it to him:confused:

and something a bit different:

I was thinking along the lines of your "different" example. (And BOY, is that "different"....) 😄

Guys, I saw some neato home made micartas over on the spyderco forum; it looks like folks were getting some really cool results with flannels, plaids and tartans. I'm sure its not for everyone, but it might be something really cool to experiment with.
