Shame On You!

Reading Tai's and "Anvil Jaw's" thrusts and parries are half the fun of some of these discussions. I believe everyone understands those and takes em as meant!

+1 Rick and Tai many times make a thread much more entertaining while remaining informative (usually :P)

We'er blacksmiths first..We make tools, everything from hammers, to axes to garden hoes..Theres just a difference, I cant honestly explain it..Maybe you have to have been an artist to see it that way?
Having been a farmer, welder and blacksmith for so long I can certainly appreciate a good tool, but having been an artist I can see the art in some tools..
I picked up an old fence tool at a flea market for $3.It was marked 1907 and built like a rock. The tool works just as good as it did over 100 years ago.Too me it's a real treasure. There's some really fine knives being made nowadays.Knife making has come a long way IMHO.

Knifemaking has come a long way in recent years, and has become as technical a subject (or practice) as one cares to make it. On the other hand, the roots of the craft, and many of the traditions that are rightly valued by many makers and collectors alike, are simpler in nature (not in execution), more organic and in many ways more personal. The 2 extremes just don't always mix well when thrown into a blender, like this forum can sometimes be.
I also think that some of the professional-level members sometimes forget that the mistakes that beginners make are part of the learning process, and some guys don't mind if their first few knives are made from files and don't have a perfect heat treat. I was like that and still am to some extent, although with age has come the understanding that learning everything the hard way just takes too damn long:( The straightest path is not the one for every student. It is an individual man's pursuit, after all.

Good post, Justin:thumbup:

All right, dang-blast it... time to separate the bull-feathers from the horse-puckey. There has been far too much mystical nonsense and ego-centric baloney-sausage floating around lately, and I for one am completely freaking sick of it. Shame on you, indeed.

I do not give one flip how anyone's knives are made, quenched, or what-the-heck-ever. The only thing that matters is, will your knives satisfy your clients' needs? ("art" knives need not apply, I'm talking about knives that will actually be used)

I hereby challenge every single knifemaker on this forum to stop talking the talk, and start walking the walk. I have no doubt that the "real" makers can do so; in fact, they already have. Pics or it didn't happen.

I enjoy being able to learn from all these folks here that know so much and have varied backgrounds and experiences.
As long as ideas and opinions are shared with some respect and a but of tactfulness, this can remain a very good place.

When did the knife become more important than the knifemaker?

Every single time a knife is called upon to perform the tasks for which it was built.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

I think someone has a poopy diaper, James,... hint hint hint. ;)

Relying on bathroom humor and thinly-veiled personal insults to make a point says a lot more about you than it does about me. I am not offended by it, I just think it's silly. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss the matter further. Allow me to say, you are welcome in my home and shop anytime; refreshments are on me and I will be asking a lot of questions.

Dadgummit, I try to express myself in language suitable for all ages. This is a family-friendly forum, by golly :D

Alright children, it may be time to let this thread roll off the page. This controversy has led to a lot of hurt feelings on at least 3 forums, I believe that several well known contributors from both sides of the controversy will no longer be frequenting this forum as a result which is a loss to all of us regardless of your individual perceptions.

peace

Hey, thanks man. I don't get out much, but if I'm ever in your neck of the woods I might take you up on that. :)
