Wonderful grinds, swedges and handles, Cal!! It's an amazing Ulster; like most of their knives!!

Big Pruner; Good thing it's easy to pinch open, or there would be shreds of fingernail laying beside it!! Bear trap snap!!
Old Ulster/Ellenville marking!! Double rattail grooves and a seal cap!!
Under bright light, the handles hint at reddish - might be Cocobola!

Lighter weight pruner, but still robust, this Ulster has the "Dwight Divine" marking!!
Nicely made, very full blade!!

Possibly my oldest knife thus far, possibly because I'm not sure if my Challenge harness jack is older or not. Still a visible etch on the main and the pen still has the factory edge. I love that curved bar shield

Oh and has another detail that I think shows the hand of a master cutler. Although hard to see in this pic, the swedge on the pen matches the curvature of the covers perfectly.

I agree. It’s my favorite type of ebony, such a fine handle it makes.

I have noticed on many an old ebony handle knife that the wood still has an extremely tight fit. A testament to the quality of material and skill of the old knife makers.

I wonder what species it was. Today when we see nice black ebony we think of Gabon ebony. But back then they also used Madagascar ebony and African Blackwood. African Blackwood was often sold as ebony, going back to ancient times. In ancient Egypt they called the wood hbny, which is now known as ebony, but in Egypt at that time it was primarily African Blackwood, a dalbergia (rosewood) species, rather than a diospyros (ebony) species.

This Knife Cal is quite spectacular, in fact it would suit down to Earth the Etch UNRIVALED on that stunning Main.
