I have a smiths precision sharpening kit which is pretty much the same as the lansky and it seems to work for me

That kit is horrible with those stupid folding plastic guides. I bought one when I first got info knives bc I was clueless on sharpening, and how high or low to hold the spine off a stone. I used it for several months and sharpened many knives with it, and while it would get a knife semi sharp the angle was all over the place along the bevel and the edge just didn't last very long.

I eventually got tired of it and tried freehand again and never picked that kit up again. It's probably the worst clamp guided system on the market just bc of the cheap folding plastic guides. Atleast the lanky the guides are solid.
