Sharpening freehand to hair whittling (the video series)

Nice video's man.

I can get most of my blade's hair popping sharp on my Sharpmaker but after seeing knifenuts blade's and your video I want to learn how to freehand sharpen. But there's so many choices out there and whenever I finally save enough I end up spending my savings on another knife:D.
Anyways, thanks for showing your technique and giving me some more ideas.. I subscribed.

Great series So-Lo. I added all four to my favorites on my YouTube account and then realized that I subscribed to your channel a while back. Keep up the great work with the vids. You're definitely helping others out with these so thanks for taking the time to make them.

Very useful vids! I'm gonna try re-evaluating my hand sharpening technique...see if I can't get my edges that sharp from now on.

Everyone should take note of So-Lo's grip technique on the handle of the knife. Its identical to what I described in my "first sharpening" thread. Its important as it locks the bevel into the stone and allows for a more consistent angle control.

Thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching it.

??? How often do you resharpen your knife? Do you return to the leather strop, or do you go to the ultra fine stone?

For light touch up, I start at video #3 and strop in video #4. :)

Thanks for all the kinds words, I will be uploading a more in depth video on my body motion and why it seems to work for me.

Knifenut- I tried that and due to the shape of the Spyderco profile set you can not put that flat side near the heel of the edge. The way the stone is shaped on the underside, it will rock up and scratch your blade. It's round under that flat corner, so any pressure rolls the stone down, thus pushing the outer edge up and scratching your blade :(

I just need to drop the dough for either the real Spyderco med and fine benchstones, or spring for the whole set of dia-sharps :D Anyone want to sponsor me? :D:D:D

:p

Added a new video to the series on "freehand stroke tips."

I'll also add it to this post so you don't have to scroll up :)

Thanks again!

Great,informative set of videos So-Lo.

You make it look so easy.:)

Great vids. Stone holders can really help, and can be had for fairly cheap and I think you would like them. I switch from hand to hand when I flip the knife, but I am fairly ambidextrous so for me that works. I also prefer lapping film on glass for stropping as I can sometimes round over my edges on leather, but you definately have the touch down on the strop. In the end our edges end up really similar: mirrored bevels that easily whittle hair. As you say it is what works for you and others may find something else that works better for them. One thing we are identical on is locking the grip in (as Knifenut points out) to keep the angle locked in. I think however someone can figure out to make their sharpening work around the basis on keeping your grip locked in as you show is going to be that person to get excellent results. Very good work on making those vids, thanks for taking the time and effort to help others out.

Thanks for that very helpful tutorial.
I see that you don't remove any potential burr that might have occurred after each step?! Sliding though e.g. a cork etc. before going to next finer stone?
Thanks, A.

I know Murry Carter does that, I don't. I think ripping the burr off would leave a jagged edge, thus ruining everything i just did. I like to sharpen my burrs off by using light pressure and a high grit stone :)

Not saying Mr Carter is wrong, I just like my way better

Could you list out the stones/strop you use and the order you do it?

Sure

DMT Dia Sharp course
Spyderco medium ( brown )
Spyderco Fine
Spyderco 306 UF ( ultra fine )
Strop

What stone size or shape does not really matter as much as knowing " how to." :)
