Sharpening on vacation

I’ve taken the Sharpmaker (if that’s considered a system) on hunting trips but it stays home if I’m doing a “normal“ style vacation. It’s nice it packs down small and easy.
I keep one in my truck, it’s too easy and portable not to carry one with me.

in case I can’t find that perfect river rock.
🤦‍♂️ ;)

The Mutt DOES look interesting.
It’s a fun experiment. I’ve put some good edges on wood turning tools as well as all my mother’s horribly abused kitchen knives using only that stone.

I suspect FTB’s more typical stones might provide a better overall experience, particularly with what I’ve seen from the pocket stone, but it’s less than 15 bucks… I mean… come on.

For a one- or two-day trip, it never even occurred to me to pack a sharpener until this thread lmao. If the vacation doesn’t warrant heavy knife usage, you probably won’t need a sharpener 99.9% of the time. Unless your blade goes dull after one swipe.

But yeah, a pocket sharpener will probably give you peace of mind without weighing you down too much.

Minimum of 2 folders with me on vacation, plus my ever present vic super tinker in the medicine bag. I've yet to feel the need to fell any sequoia's on vacation, so I don't need a sharpener. I've never considered my pockets getting dull, now I have yet one more thing to buy.

I started taking my Falkniven DC3 with me. Whatever kitchen I'm in always has dull knives and I can't live like that for days.

Hardly a super steel these days, but I can confirm it’s very effective on S35VN. I’m not sure what some of the more… sophisticated… steels would be like.

Just for anyone who wants to browse the list: https://www.baryonyxknife.com/bprshst.html
I've used the artic fox on up to s45vn, and it's fine. I sharpened a Spyderco in s90v a few weeks ago and I'd definitely rather use a diamond plate.

I've brought the Work sharp field sharpener on longer trips, but I don't recall using it on my EDC. I have, however, used it on kitchen knives both at my parent's house, and on vacation with them. It's far better than the pull through sharpener my dad uses on his kitchen knives.

Usually a DMT Diafold here too.

If I'm backpacking and just have 1095, just a two-sided pocket stone.

When I was still traveling and doing trade shows, or training various military units I would carry my SAK OH, a Swiss Tool, and a EZE-LAP dual diamond hone. Overseas in Europe or Japan, same except Would carry a SAK Camper, as too many countries a OH opening/locking knife is prohibited. I kept my blades sharp and surprising amount of time I would end up sharpening someone else's knife who did not have a sharpening system with them. John

Last beach house I was at the kitchen knives were laughably dull. I used the bottom of a coffee mug to sharpen one up. It's not ideal but it works.

If it is somewhere I go regularly I would tend to have a small Victorinox knife sharpener there already.
Otherwise the bottom of a mug system works for me too.

Usually don't find it necessary to sharpen while on vacation. I do always keep a strop in my pickup, and if I think I'm going to need to do anything more of a touch up I might take something like a Spyderco Double Stuff.
