Sharpening on vacation

On some vacations with carry on luggage I haven't even - le gasp - had knife at all! Had fun and stuff.

This thread topic is why you should EDC a bench whetstone for these emergency sharpening situations.

I take a Gossman GST Small in my bag everywhere I go, whether on vacation or just to the local park. It’s among my “everywhere kit” that stays on me all the time. It is fairly fine, so it’s great for touch-ups and doesn’t remove much material.

I’ve used it to sharpen Sleipner, O1, 1095, 420HC, 5160, S7, 4116, VG-10, 12C27, 1055, 3V, S30V, 154CM, and some mystery steel that one of my mom’s kitchen knives has. It’s never had a problem with any of those steels. The vast majority of the time, I use it on 420HC, which works great with it.

For size comparison, here’s the Gossman GST Small next to a knife I’m sure many are familiar with, a Mora Eldris. As you can see, the GST Small takes up practically no space at all. Easy to carry.

Spyderco's Combi stone is pretty small, and really moves some metal. But on a vacation, I do not carry a sharpening system. Mainly because I spent good money on steels that have great edge retention, like S90V, or S110V. The sharp edge will last a good long time, and it's supposed to be a vacation!!!

Took my Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener when I went on holiday recently, mostly to sharpen friends knives. I think it works well and it's compact.

I used it on my mates Vic Spartan and on a Buck Vantage that I'd gifted him the last time I'd seen him around 2 years ago.

They say you can sharpen an Emerson chisel grind on a rock. I never had the nerve with my CQC-7 custom, but I guess if you are lost in the wild, it might be an option.
