Shave of the day?

For no other reason, here's some Futur pr0n!

Whats the procedure for trying blades? Can you switch after 1 or 2 of the same blades?

Personally, I perfer to shave with five or eight of a blade type, generally four to six shaves per blade, so 20-32 shaves, before making any conclusion. In this way, the usual day-to-day variations average out.

so it takes about a year :D

Thank you for the advice, but I think I'm going to disregard it now. One of the things I'm most enjoying is the daily variation. I know variation is a newbies worst enemy, but I can't help it. I think that's what made shaving for me so dull in the first place. I'm still trying to be rather objective and not change to many variables at once. If i start running into trouble that may change. But right now I'm willing to sacrifice perfect shaves sooner for the personal enjoyment. that was the point for me getting into wetshaving. the pursuit of a perfect shave sooner and faster was what got us in the dark place to begin with.

and yeah. Bayrum. Is soap edible?

Munky, that's a decent looking shaving bowl/pot you have there:thumbup:

I'd like to get something like that myself.

Today I used a new tub of Taylor Shaving Shop cream. Was a bit put off by the smell in the tub-kind of old geezer from the 1950s aura, rancid hair oil...But once whipped up the cream had a very good scent and like most Taylor, lathers superbly.Keeps moist too. But, I don't know, the Feather I used was cutting up rough, it's the second shave with it and it gave some nasty nicks. This is rare,so I assume it must be a dud blade.:grumpy:

I used a sample pack of Baxster aftershave balm. Fantastic lasting punch of methanol, but still very soothing. My face is so soft and lovely.

Willgoy, you should be able to find a nice old Onion soup bowl at a flea-market. I'm convinced they're damn near perfect for lather bowls. Perfect size, good handles, thick clay walls to keep heat, and colored on the inside so you can see your lather build.

That Gillette Slim Adjustable is a sweet shaver. I have a '62 model just like that one. What year is yours? The date code will be a letter on one side and a number from 1 to 4 on the other side of the handle, on the underside of the head. The Slim Adjustable like you have is good with Derbys and Sharks. I use both in mine. I've been using a Feather in my Edwin Jagger DE87 for the last week but it's not one to try when just starting out. It is the sharpest, most aggressive blade I've used. In the EJ, it gives me BBS with 3 passes, but causes some weepers and razor burn. I may try it in my Slim set on 1, 2, or 3.

You can get Derby blades for $9.99 + $2.76 shipping per hundred blades on Ebay. If you buy 300 blades from that vendor (the shaving factory, I believe) they'll send you a brand new Shaving Factory razor for free. It's a Ming Shi, Chinese made twist to open razor. Essentially a copy of the Gillette Super Speed, only milder and made from thinner metal. I don't think you could cut yourself with it if you tried. I've been using mine with some Bic blades that Gollnick gave me. It gives a great shave with them. I can probably use the Feather blades in it and get great results.
It won't last as long as a good old Gillette, Gem, or Shick, or as long as a new Merkur, Muhle, or Edwin Jagger, but for free, who can complain?
It would make a great travel DE since it comes in a plastic case with small mirror and a place for a 5 pack of blades. And it wouldn't be a heart breaker if it got lost, stolen, damaged, or confiscated (stolen by government thugs).
I'd hate to lose my EJ or any of my Gillette, Gem, or Schick razors while traveling. Even though I have 3 Gillette Travel Techs and a Gem 1912 travel razor, I'd take the Ming Shi along instead.

BTW, today's shave consisted of a Feather blade, Edwin Jagger DE87 razor, Van der Hagen boar brush, Godrej Rich Foam shave cream (in a tube, not canned goo), and Master Bay Rum after shave.

Tomorrow will be 1969 Gillette Super Adjustable, Derby blade, Godrej Menthol Mist or Palmolive Refreshing Lemon shave cream, Tweezerman badger brush, and either Aqua Velva (how a man should smell) or Master Iceland Breeze after shave. Though I may shave with my 1955 Gillette Super Speed or my pre '51 Gillette fat handled Tech. Derby blade, regardless.

Now my wife has finally decided she wants to start shaving with a DE. She's also tired of paying for cartridge blades. I tried to give her several of my old cartridge razors. No dice.
She shaved with a DE as a teen and used to cut herself all the time. She was using her grandfather's razor (orphaned at age 6, raised by her maternal grandparents). I think he must have had a red tip SS or something.
I shaved her legs one night with my Ming Shi razor/Bic blade/Campbell's shave cream(for lather maker, i use it with brush and mug), just to show her how a good DE/blade/cream combo can give her legs just as smooth a shave as it gives my face, and not cut her up.
She was worried that I'd cut her ankles when I got near them, but I didn't cut her at all.
Now she wants an old Lady Gillette razor for her own.:D

That one was in the second quarter of '62. Unfortunately after using it for a few days I noticed the blade exposure was way off on one side. I thought it was just my inexperience until I looked closer. The guard plate had been bent, so he offered to let me return it and payed the return shipping. Waiting on an EJ DE89L from the English shaving company for 24.50 cad! also got some derby's to try and a little 10g tin of Edwin Jagger sandalwood cream. God bless the nose diving euro. that was all about 26 cad after shipping.

I also got a super-speed flare handle off of the B&B bst for 10 because I rather enjoyed using a solid old Gillette. In the mean time I've gone back to the mach 3, and it sucks. Though i've been getting much better shaves with it than before I stumbled in here. I foresee getting another Slim or Fatboy sometime in the future. Maybe do some flea market hunting with my grandmother.

From what I understand the lady Gillette's are the same head as the super-speeds. let her try yours for awhile?

Used a feather today. That was fun :D

two little nicks, but I think I learned a few things so its more than worth it.

No irritation, and BBS on upper face.

I used a Feather the morning too. I really love them. They are more expensive, but the shave is just effortless and of absolutely great quality.

and you can really tell when your at the wrong angle. I don't know why these arn't more recommended for beginners. Ok, i mean I do, but the pro's outweight the nicks once you have a basic technique down.

What would you recommend for an aftershave balm that's very moisturizing and has a good kick of methanol? Had a sample of Baxster's that I really liked, but cant find it, also its expensive.

I can't, and don't want to imagine holding that thing without the lines. You don't need to grip a razor hard, but you do need to twist to flip the edge. The lines help when your hands inevitably get a little wet and soapy.

Gillette super speed came today. Wanted a cheap razor for travel, and also missed having a razor that's almost 3 times as old as me. Will be a few days before I use it, i want to get the DE89L down first. Feels like a toy compared to the DE89L's heft.
