SHBM's :D I've hit lucky number 7!!!

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=353749

The FATTEST one I have ever heard of is in the link above in the middle of the other two. It is Satin with a logo.

Thanks Cobalt!

Still makes me wonder... this one (.295" satin) has the Ergo logo, and as best I can tell, the Ergos were introduced in 1999. Now, we know Jerry used fat A2 stock, but when did he start with fat (5/16") INFI? Was Jerry shipping both Ergos & Straight Handles at the same time... with overlap?

So... what would be the fattest satin 1 of 300 anyone has heard of? And as best I can tell, not all presentation grade SHBMs were 1 of 300s... is this true to what you know?

.

Nice work on finding all those....requires deep pockets and a lot of detective work I'd imagine.

I just spoke with Cobalt  and he says that not all presentation grade SHBM's were 1 of 300's. In fact most were probably not. Cobalt says he has a 0.275 1 of 300. (man this third person speaking is strange stuff)

SHBM's were still being shipped out in 2000.

I think that the middle one was an original superfatty 5/16 coated and it was sent in for a refurb in 1999-2000 where it was made satin and real purty by the factory

But I am only relaying what Cobalt said and I cannot remember everything.:)

I think you did pretty well for not being able to remember anything. :) :D

.275 1/300's are downright sexy :p.......the only thing that makes a SHBM "presentation grade" is that the dimples are ground off. The knife is smooth. I like em either way :D.

Detective work: Yes. Deep pockets: No. In fact, I've got holes in my pockets :p....I'm a federal employee.

Selling off one's collection to buy Busse: Yes

Oh and I never really answered that. Yes, Busse was overlapping because he was still shipping SHBM's and SHSH's with Diamond groove micarta handles like the ones on the Ergos. I have only seen a few Straight Handles with those handles, but there may be a good number of those floating around. Those were definite overlaps.

But as to getting a straight answer on dates, forget it

Thanks Cobalt.

Is your .275" thick 1 of 300 satin or coated?

Well one is coated and the other is a user that I hand rubbed for 10 hours to make satin and it is still 0.275. That one is a real fatty.

A REAL fatty...TEN HOURS?!?!?! WOW!!! I only spent about 1 1/2 hours on mine. Yours must be MIRROR!!! I started with 1200, then 2000 til completely smooth, then rubbing compound and a buffer, then some hand buffing with a clean cloth, then polish compound on the buffer, then hand buffing with clean cloth, then back to the buffer for the final touch. Looks good enough for me at least :p

pbusby is a machine. Think "The INFI-NATOR"!

I'll be BOK!!! :p

No machine ever touched my knife nor does any machine ever touch any of my SHBM's. It was all hand sanding with 600 grit from start to finish except for the original removal of the coating with 320 grit bead blast at 90 psi.

That is why it took me 10 hours for what took you 1.5 hours.

I did all my sanding by hand, the only machine I used was the buffing pad attachment on a pnumatic tool for the compound. The knife looked great with the sandpaper finish I put on, but the rubbing compound takes out the lighter scratches and the polishing compound shines it up real nice. I'd recommend them, I use the polishing compound to clean satin knives when they start to get stained up. You can get it at the Auto store like Kragen or Auto Zone...it's from turtle wax :p

well, you just ruined all your SHBM's with that buffer. Now they are just scrap metal. I'll give you 20 bucks per pound for that scrap steel.

There are at least a Few SHBM's .295,(I know Where at least one other is right now)

Yes there was overlap, Ergos intro'ed at Blade 2001, shipping some what later.

SHBA's were the first to go out of production of the Straight handled knives.

Fat INFI was used in the last half of 2000, at least for a Few SHBA's

The Fat(.290+) SHBM's that I know of are all Very Early Production, Verry, Verrry Early

Thanks for your input Andre....I'd love to get my hands on a fatty like THAT :D assuming it would either be a 1/6 or a 1/300! Hope your move is going smoothly!

you think those early Fatty's might be A2? Even though there supposedly is no A2 SHBM's.

The one in the link that I posted is definitely a late 98 to 99 model Fatty. It was given a custom refinish and thinned out edge by Busse so it probably lost some of it's thickness, but is still probably thicker than most.

Thanks for the info Andre!!! Glad to hear your travel went fairly smooth. I hope all goes well with settling in.

or maybe even earlier. :D

One way to tell the early ones from the later ones is Rc. So if you have a 1 of 300 or possible proto then it must Rc out to 62 since Jerry did not drop the Rc until later.

Here is a pic of the Fatty thanks to another Hog
