sometimes i head out wearing jeans, or sometimes i wear cargos, in snow or rain i wear my gortex hiking pants. but my favorite pants are a pair of camo bdus which i find tough but comfortable. :o

i wore them on a local trail once and kinda got some odd looks from people. i wasnt wearing anything else out of the ordinary except for the camo bdu's (woodland green pattern). not even a knife on the belt, just my victorinox swiss tool spirit.:)

so what are your opinions on wearing camoflauge or "army looking clothing" while hiking or camping? :D

i see teenagers wear them all the time in the mall, although i think they wear it more for fashion purposes ;)

do you guys have any experiences you can share? am i just being too sheeple conscious?

cheers

I wear bdu pants a lot in the woods, and as you said have had a few looks from people, not most people but some. If it makes em nervous just more room for me lol:D

I wouldn't be too concerned. Here's the key question: When you see a stranger on the trail wearing BDUs, how do you feel?

I thought about it and after lots of thinking I think you're overthinking it.

Occasionally I see guys who are geared up in a big way. They have gone and camo'd everything on them and they look a little sketchy to me. They often look as though they are trying to intimidate the people that see them. I'm not really into that.

Unless you feel you fit the description above, I wouldn't worry about it. A pair of pants? Big deal. Now if you have matching pants, shirt, vest, boonie hat, boots, and pack, then I think you would have to expect some "creeped out" response. Because really, you'd look a bit crazy.

I wear some gear sometimes. I don't see anyone looking at me funny...but then I don't usually see anyone at all when I'm out. I have some tactical tailor gear in OD. I guess I'd feel a little funny if I was all rigged up and ran into somebody hiking with their kid. I think they'd reasonably feel a little tense.

OTOH I wear a beat up old cowboy hat and I grin a lot so kids like me.

jca, I'd have fun with it. Bring a banjo, and play the theme from "Deliverance." You'll have the whole forest to yourself.

i think it all depends on where you live too... if you live closer to a city, than i can see some sheeple giving dirty looks... a lot of folks around here, where BDU's.... hell my wife had a pair she wore constantly when we first met...:o
i practically grew up in BDU's.. my dad spent 20 some odd years in the army.. i have been wearing camo about as long as i can remember....:D

If you're going to wear camouflage, utilize it! :p Sheeple can't feel tense about what they don't notice. "Hey Gladys, did that tree over there just move?" ;)

I spent the evening in a nursery school with suburban parents, wearing shredded cargo pants held together with duct tape. I'm not really that concerned with what strangers think of the way I dress.

Yes. When you start to second guess your trail clothes because of a few odd looks, you need to relax and be yourself.

some good advice on here.

but ya im not too concerned with it, i wear what i wear.

bdu's are pretty damn comfy actually.

brian i dont know how to play a banjo but i would like to learn someday :D

When I lived in New York City, I used to go up to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Extensive wooded areas, including an informal bird sanctuary. I usually wore camo jeans and shirt with a black backpack.

One day I was entering the woods along the back of the golf course and looked into the lower ground ahead. There was a military-style exercise going on, teenagers with grown men as a HQ directing them. I slowed down, stayed by the trees, walked past everyone without being spotted.

Partly me being careful, partly them not seeing what they didn't expect to see.

In Australia, anyone who got around in a full set of patterned camos ie. pants and shirt (and wasn't actually in the military or using them specifically for hunting) would be considered a tryhard wanker. Wearing one item of camo clothing, particularly just a pair of pants, is basically ok.

I try to emulate Bill Murray in Caddyshack, gets me a wide berth on the trail :D

I walk my pitbull on a chain with a spike collar, wearing bdu pants.. I'm not dangerous. yet people still stare.. fuck them is what I say.

I need to find some more Camo BDUs. I find that people stare at my tattoos more than how I'm dressed. Oh well.

I might give you a look, but that's just because I've never been a big fan of woodland. now if you were wearing mossy oak, sure, that'd be one thing, but... :D

For some reason people stare at my camo car...

:D

As for the camo BDU's I would say wear them and don't mind people staring.

Does that mean you're a camo-snob? I didn't know they made high-brow patterns.:D:D
