sheffield knife supply

Don't forget Pop's although the first order is a little slow because they'll email back with you to find out what type of shipping you prefer and to verify the card (at least they did that with me.) The people at Pop's are first rate also. Especially for those of us in the Southeast, the shipping is fast.

I really can't say enough about Tracy though, he really impressed me on my first order. If he had Gators and 3m Microfilms I'd probably buy all my belts from him.

Thanks Will, BTW Ive got a buddy that lives in southern Alabama but I cant remember the name of the town. Went through there a couple of years ago for the first time and I gotta say it is a beautiful state. Not as nice as Kentucky though.:D

Did you know the toothbrush was invented in Kentucky? If it was invented anywhere else they would've called it a teethbrush. What do you call 32 Kentuckians standing in a circle? A full set of teeth :p :D

ROTFL:)
You know what the best thing to come out of Alabama is?

I have never ordered from Sheffield. I have made my first few orders with Jantz. If you want your order shipped within two or threes days of placing it, don't go with them or you will be really pissed. :foot:

I'll give Sheffield a go for my next order, I'm green and still figuring out what is best for me.

I've never had any problems with Jantz. I have to admit that I live about 70 miles from them, but my orders have been shipped very promptly.

I'm a financial Luddite. I don't/won't have a credit card. I place a phone order with them on Tuesday, mail a money order that afternoon and I have my stuff by Thursday. USPS gets the MO there using general delivery on Wednesday and Jantz has it on a UPS truck that same day.

I think the only catch I ever have is with their shipping charge. Under 60# everything is $8.95. That's great if you have a $200 order, but a little steep if all you need is some liner and a couple of pieces of micarta. Usually not a problem for me to order enough to justify shipping though. :D

I have ordered online from them 2 times and its at the very least 2 days before they send me an order confirmation. I will try picking up the phone next time in hopes of getting my stuff a bit faster.

Shipping out the next business day seems pretty good to me, most outfits don't ship the same business day unless you order early. Even then, it's no guaranteed. I think many knife shops get used to doing business without totals, everyone pretty much knows what they are buying when they call, I don't usually get totals from Pop, AKS etc when I ring them up. I always call Pop - no problems over the phone, great to deal with.

I placed my first order with Sheffields in 1981.
Ann can be a little short sometimes but always comes through.... I like old school :)

Don, you must've placed your first order just a little before me! I can't remember if it was '81 or '82. :) Paul wasn't always the friendliest guy in the world, either, but he was always nice enough to come back to again.
Sheffield was the first place I ever bought from, and probably where I've bought more than anywhere else; my latest order was a couple months back for some nickel silver rod and tube. The other frequent place was Koval's.
Nowadays, I try to make Tracy and Chuck my first choices and then turn to Sheffield for most of the rest.

Two other supplier names out of the fog...who remembers them?
Bob Schrimsher's Custom Knife Supply
Holt-Sornberger

I've been ordering from Sheffield supply for ten years or so.
They always remember me by name and they know their business.

They are not high tec by any means but I enjoy the personal touch, even if it comes with a little grit.

I've ordered from Sheffield several times over the years. A few times from Ann (she cracks me up) and some from who ever else answered the phone. They've always taken care of me and done a good job. Their assortment is amazing.

I tend to prefer online ordering as much as possible now days. It just seems easier to me and my day schedule is pretty full so evenings works best. I know a lot of people don't want to order online for a variety of reasons and I see their point also.

Fitzo I used to bother Bob during the lunch hour when I ordered. never did use Holt-Sornberge but did buy some items from Anderson on the East Coast during the mid 80's.

There are things I get only from Sheffield. Micarta, Vulcanized Fibre Spacer, G-10. They sell these things in bigger sheets than you can get from other spots, and their prices are spot on. They're not all computerized, and you have to do your math before calling. Once you are properly prepared, and call, its usually a nice conversation with Ann. At least for me. Her family is from GA, and we usually chat about that.

I get my belts, and bolts from Pops.

I get my steel from NWA, and Aldo (01).

I get this and thats from Tracy, and use his site for research a lot of the time. He definitely has the nicest site.

I get all my wood from Carltons Rare Woods in Atlanta. Its really lucky to have a very comprehensive brick and mortar location where you can go and see the wood before buying it, and also where you can buy it in bulk. I've mentioned them to y'all before, but if you didn't go at last year's blade show, hit it this year. It is the best wood store I've ever had my foot inside.

Fitzo, man that was a long time ago but seems like yesterday. My father was making a lot of knives back then and he didn't like to order stuff, so I was ordering for both of us.

Never bought from Sornberger or Schrimsher's but remember them.
Did buy alot from K&G and I do miss the Kovals', they were fine folks!

I had to post to this too. We often order from Sheffield and have good results. The trick is to not think of Sheffield as a modern retailer.

Her catalog is out of date the day it is released - and I understand that. It's the reason we don't have a print one. People get upset when they are looking at a frammis in your your catalog for $2.35 and they are now told it is $3.50. In this day and age it is simply impossible to offer diverse products that meeting customer's dynamic needs and to offer a print catalog.

Many customers are not comfortable on the internet (I guess some retailers as well). When one of those calls us, we certainly enjoy the phone call - get a chance to catch up with how the kids and the new shop are doing, but the list is written in a coil bound notebook. It's going to take some time to enter all those items into the store's POS, insure stock is available, apply current pricing, weigh it and calculate shipping. Even Marilyn doesn't talk on the phone long enough to do that. We're more likely to assemble the order and call back later in the day with the info. We understand the challenged of manual order processing. ;)

Sorry. I'm off on a tangent here. Ann has served us for years now and we are glad she is there. Yes, there are problems. Our last order took several weeks to ship. That isn't a reason to abandon a supplier that we value.

We're hoping this is just an event rather than a progression and our continued support will help.

Thanks Ann

Rob!

I used to order from Bob Scrimsher in the 70's, one of the square wheels in my shop right now (still running fine) is from Bob. At the time his "wholesale catalog" was an absolute candy store. Sure weren't many suppliers around back then. I've got to wonder what Bob thought I was doing when I'd send him my blades for heat treat cause gawd
they were some ugly things

My most recent order was from Sheffield. Who else stocks micarta pin stock? Added in a couple of other hard to find things I needed. Yeah their catalog is always out of date and the guy who answered the phone was a bit gruff, but the shipping was fast and accurate and the pricing was fair. Their selection is clearly the widest around.

That said, I agree with several other folks here. If I can order it on line I will.

That wasn't a guy, that was ANN. I have to watch myself so that I don't say Yes Sir!!
She is really nice once you know her.

Wow! Take me back! I wasn't making then - only dreaming about it - but this sure was a nice reverie... I remember him very well. Thanks!
