Shemagh anyone?????

Hajji scarfs, love them. Must have bought 3 or 4 while in afghanistan

I've got one and like it a lot. Use for everything a bandanna would be used for plus some stuff. Recently I got a Buff though and find myself using it a bit more but I carry both when on a hike.

I have a couple. One is a memento from a buddy that was overseas, and another is always in the If-I-Need it pack (BOB). I've used it as a scarf during trainings to keep hot brass from going down my neck, as well as for keeping cooler during the summer. Will try it out during the wintertime out of curiosity, but I think the cotton material won't be as good as the polypro or fleece balaclavas that can offer the same flexibility, albeit in a bulkier package.

I have two, a green and black from years ago it is a soft cotton very comfy and the pattern is woven in. The new one is a thinner "harder" cotton and the pattern is a printed black and white ( just a cheaper knock off I guess.)
I have used them to make water filters.
Keep the dust out.
A makeshift umbrella ( spread over a twiggy branch)
Used it to hold water on a heat struck cadet (It was drapped over her on a stretcher it held more water than the thin cotton undershirt she was wearing and also let us duck the female minor with a wet T-shirt issue) When she came around and was able to sit up it was worn like a big wet shawl.
Used it as padding on ill fitting pack.
As a sunshade on the inside of the car window. or stop a rattle on a long distance car trip.
Used it a extra shade/filter on a beside lamp when the missus had a migraine in a motel on a holiday.
Sweat rag.
Have shown cadets ( but not used it properly) how to use it as a arm sling and bandage
as a neck warmer.
Thrown over steel tools when fencing to stop them getting too hot for my baby soft hands to hold.
As a carrier for odd items ( think the bloke with his worldly possessions tied up in a kerchief tied to a stick over his shoulder)
rip into strips for bandage or light rope ,lashing.
that'll do for the moment.
Carl
P.S. Oh yeah fish/crab net/scoop

I have several. I use them pretty often in the Winter and the Summer, not so much in between.

I love my 2. They work good keeping my neck warm while dirt biking I used 2 during with my clothese one night I just wrapped my head with both and curled up in a ball no sleeping bag but I froze I thought it would be warmer. Keep in mind I have the dirt cheap ones like from us cav. But they are nice camo for my bug out and help in moderate temps.

The buff is one of my fav things! It is great for most seasons and they make knock offs to on cheaper than dirt haha.

Since this thread has been raised from the dead, I’ll update. I bought one of the e-auction place 42x42, OD green of course. I haven’t used it a whole lot yet, but it is nice for keeping the cold off my neck meat. The wife got one too (not in OD unfortunately) to wear casually. Pretty functional piece of gear. Nice to pull up over the face when the cold wind is howling and I’ve noticed it doesn’t trap moisture like a fleece gaiter and facemask will.

I've had a couple, but gave them away to a friend who had more use. Need to find another.
My experience with them is that there are 2 different styles coming out of the sandbox -- one fairly light and loose woven and a second thicker, tighter weave, heavier -- and the warp and weft threads are hand knotted around the edges, similar to fringe - which helps with evaporation. (and then the cheap printed bandanas from sportsman's guide, us cav, etc...)

I got a couple in Jordan. Just the standard black and white, and red and white ones. They were invaluable in the desert heat for keeping my head out of the sun. Haven't used them in the States yet.

Central Indiana probably isn't the best place in the country to dress like Hamas. I probably wouldn't get 2 blocks. If the cops didn't beat my ass, the John Deere boys definitely would :)

I use a Buff for the AT and other hiking. I like that thing a lot.

They really do work great as a wrap for keeping hot brass from falling down your blouse. If any of you have ever had this happen, you know what a burn REALLY feels like!

I use mine as a winter scarf. Just got one, so haven't tested in summer yet. So far, works great.

Yup...not cool when the brass is stuck....

My kids wanted scarves for the winter... So I bought them shemaghs. Same price, more flexibility. I'm waiting for the time to actually wrap it in the traditional way to see what their teachers will do, but their heads are too small yet...:D

Edited to add: I just had to.... He wanted me to put his scarf on, so I did....:D

What a GREAT pic of a future warrior!!!

I've folded mine up to about a 5"-6" width and use it as a scarf. It essentially seals up the neck opening of my coat which keeps the cold out and the heat in. Even folded over a half dozen times, it's still thin and plyable so there's no aggrivating bulk around your neck.

It has a lot of uses besides a simple scarf, and I like multi-use items, so I like my shemagh:thumbup:

I wouldn't ever wear one in the UK. I'd either look like a left wing student or an Islamist.
