Shemagh anyone?????

I always carrys 2 of them in my BOB, one in tan/black and the other in green/black. They have tons of uses and can come in real handy in an emergency or training. It can act as a sling, a water pre-filter, scarf, camoflauge, head/neck wrap for warmth or dust, wrap to keep hot brass from falling down your blouse, cut into strips and use it as straps to tie things up and so on...... Wearing one in general public in the free world we can all agree would not be a good thing, outside of that would you carry one and what would you use it for?!?!?!

Well, I just threw one into an Amazon order. If I don't end up using it, I can at least use it as a background when photographing gear! That seems to be a primary use of them anyway. :D

I'm glad we've been able to keep this valuable and interesting thread going without getting derailed by politics. Political symbolism seems as inextricably woven into these things as the pattern.

Picked up a tan/black one in a recent order, just waiting for it to arrive. Will give me something to play around with :D

I don't know this dude, but he may not be trying to screw with anyone. London has some serious anti-western sections where muslim garb is warn and displayed intentionally as an AFFRONT to westerners. There are some neighborhoods in London where the local imams have enacted sharia (islamic) law and have their own punishment system. Wearing the shemagh, keffiyah or whatever you want to call it there can be interpreted as a display against the UK, the US and other western, non-barbaric cultures.

I wouldn't wear one over there, either cause the association is different. They don't call it Londonistan for nothing.

really?
I have never seen a shemagh being viewed as anti-UK by anyone before, and I regualy wear one (green and black, if that makes a difference).

I wear one all the time.Or at least carry one.The thing that impressed me most was when I wore one snowshoeing in -40 weather and I was comfortable.warm enough to feel good but cool enough not to sweat too bad.
great piece of kit.

Well after reading this post I just ordered one along with some other stuff from best glide, Sounds like a useful item to have in the BOB. Thanks OP.

A friend of mine has a 50/50 cotton/wool one he got from his translator in Iraq, but I've only been able to find 100% cotton ones here in the states and online.
I've been using one at work (farming) and they're great.

This

is always a good option if you want to avoid being mistaken for a hamas fan.

This is a link to the one I use:

http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com/product/desert-storm-scarf-2984.cfm

Scarf, head/neck cover, snotcatcher, towel, car window cleaner, etc. I actually get quite a lot of use out of them. I usually buy them in lots of 12 from Sportsmansguide for a bout $20 plus shipping. It generally works out to about $2.50+/- apiece.

I keep one or two in all my emergency kits in my cars, at work, and at home.

Thank you so much for posting that!

I have some of those, and wanted more, but did not know where to get them...

Now I do!

Thank you.

I'd seen the ones listed in Sportsman's Guide, but wasn't sure of their quality.
are they actually woven pattern, or printed, like a funny colored bandana?

No, they are t-shirt material, in the shape of a scarf. From the first gulf war, this was the military answer to the shemagh... Not the same shape, material, or design, but similar functions.

Plain brown, no prints. They're a jersey material, and usually hold up for 6 months or so. For the price, they're worth it, seeing as how they stand up well to actual usage/abuse.

What really kills them is putting them in the wash. That really beats them up for some reason. Otherwise, like I said at the price point you can't go wrong. Dimensions are approx 24" x 72".

Oh yeah, another plus is that the material is thinner than a Shemagh, so you can roll or fold up 3 or 4 of them and they take up about as much space as one Shemagh.

YMMV :)

I have never seen one being worn traditionally here. Doesn't mean they aren't we do get women in Berka. The only trad male headgear I see here are the occasional Sikh Turban.
But They are growing as a fashion accessory here in Ozz but not in my neighbourhood.
If given the choice I would definitely take the softer woven version over the harsher printed version.

You're quite welcome!

Here's another link to Sportsmansguide (my company firewall blocks the site and I was at work today so...)

12 for $15.00 + shipping. That's less than $2.00 apiece. Oh, and I almost forgot, Made In The USA.
