The nearby thread asked the "Why?" about shields, so I thought I'd start a new one with the "What?"
Here are a few that I had nearby, pretty ordinary. But I will follow later with some unusual an interesting ones! Anybody got any out of the ordinary? Let's see 'em!!

A guy could get deep into collecting just different shields and stay busy for a while. Now you have me wanting to dig through my knives just see how many different shields there are. Cool stuff!

I found this thread to be really interesting, I love the old knives. Just a quick look tells you that they were quality. Great stuff and thank you to all that posted. Please show me more.

waynorth,

What a fabulous collection of vintage knives with a wonderful array of different and diverse set of shields!.

This deserves another bump to see if any other forumites can shed some light on this very interesting subject.??

Not all Shapleighs have diamonds, but most of them do!

Here are some shields proportioned to suit the knives (sort of)! Most are easy, but can you name them all??

Hi Charlie,

I'll see what I can come up with as well within my collection regarding shield diversity, so as to give it a go here with this very interesting thread/theme.. I hope I can play some small part and add to this fabulous set of examples that you have posted without to much redundancy. I would like to encourage others to post some of there new and old shields as well.. This thread could evolve into something quite intriguing, as I do not recall ever reading or seeing this information before in any other worthy publication or media.

This is really great information here that took some effort to assemble and shoot.. Thanks to waynorth for a grand idea to start with and the wherewith all to follow it up.

This is a really interesting thread. I've been thinking about collecting different shields. I've recently bought/ordered several new Case folders with interesting shields but I only have one with me.

I find the new Case "Circle C" shield to be very interesting. I keep wondering how durable they are, the bone some parts looks so thin I'll be interested to see how it holds up under wear. I have two in the mail. I picked up a mini-trapper just yesterday with a shield I hadn't seen before, specifically because of the shield. I was looking on the Case website (Case College) and wished they had a section showing all of the different shields they have used over the years, and what they signify. They do this for different patterns, blade shapes and jig patterns, but not for shields or handle materials. I wish they would. Just flipping through the current Shepherd Hills catalog comes up with a ton of different shield designs.

When the new knives come in I'll get a pic and post it.
