Shilin Cutters, ethnic Chinese folders, pics

Very nice. Thanks for posting those.

Those knives are beautiful!

CAS Hanwei makes a few models that are inexpensive modern interpretations of traditional Chinese knives. I found the blade and handle shape to be perfect for everyday cutting tasks. Although the Hanwei knives are lockbacks and not slipjoints....

Let's not forget the Bob Lum Chinese folder, brought to mass market by Spyderco.

Very nice scores. I have family in Taiwan and went over there recently. Already had this large version, bought from a kind BF member in Singapore:

Currently on a waiting list for some smaller 3 inch models.

Sweet pics all around. I've actually got a few handmade ones on order via a fellow on another forum. Thanks to these pics, the wait is now AGONIZING!!! And to think I just shot him a reminder yesterday. Coincidence?

Is that a Kuo built Shilin knife? The scales look like horn. Very very attractive. I would love to see the imprint on the blade. Have you been to the stores of the makers, either Chiu, Kuo or both? What is the configuration of the three incher, scale and blade material?

I have a 2.5 incher, Cowry-X blade and composite scales, in the mail to me.

I hope you can post a bunch of pics of 3" knife when it arrives.

Thank you for posting the photo.

Yes, this one was made by Kuo. I went to their shop a couple of times, and while their production knives catalogue was quite average, they had a lot of custom made kitchen knives at knockout prices. I think their specs for the Shilin folders are fairly standard, stainless steel blade with brass bolsters/pins and composite handles. Considering the rate was around $100 for one, I felt it was a fair price. I got to handle some samples though, and they were excellent. I'll try and get some pics of the stamping later, though it's just the shop name Kuo He Ji.

The current generation bladesmith is fairly young, must be early 30s IIRC. I watched him sharpen some knives on a waterstone, he definitely knows what he's doing.

To be quite honest, I didn't even know there was another family making these Shilin folders, though I should've guessed. Another shop to watch out for next time I go back to Taiwan.
