Hey guys, I just need to know how you ship your knives. I have to send my 930 Kulgera to Benchmade from Florida for warranty work, but have never shipped a knife.

The USPS has guides for shipping on it's web-sit. It's pretty much common sense.

DO NOT ship your knife in it's original box. Keep your original box at home. Some companies will send them back, others will not. Just read in another thread that a member sent his ZT 0551 back to Kershaw in the original box.....the knife came back to him without the box.

As far as shipping......I almost always use USPS small flat rate boxes. Make sure you insure your package and get delivery confirmation. You can print labels at home from here: https://sss-web.usps.com/cns/landing.do -- Just sign up for a free account and create your label. Delivery confirmation is free if you create your label online. Use the "Add your label to a batch" option and print the batch sheet after you print your shipping label. Take the batch sheet to the PO with you and have the postal clerk scan it after he/she takes your package. This will ensure that you receive timely tracking updates.

As far as packaging......Always bubble wrap your knife and tape it generously. Grab an old newspaper, crumple some up and start squishing it into the box....making a make shift "bed" for your knife to rest in. I usually cut up some cardboard or another USPS box and use it to reinforce the inside of my shipping box. You can do this before or after you put your newspaper inside. Once you're satisfied that your knife is well padded in it's "bed", stuff more newspaper on top of the knife to ensure that it will not move around in the box. The goal is to be able to shake the sealed box, and feel NOTHING move around inside. Once you've accomplished this goal, tape your label onto the outside of the box. Make sure you DO NOT tape over the two barcodes on the label. DO tape over the name and address. Also, make sure you use a quality packing tape like 3M that will not un-stick itself.

Hope this helps.

NOTE*****The thread that RevDevil linked to has some great info and tips.

Great!! Thanks for the fast responses. My main concerns were whether I should pay for some kind of insurance and if I needed to worry about any kind of law in Florida or with the USPS.

Insurance is cheap, IIRC I paid about $3.00 for $120.00, definatly worth it if the knife gets lost. Put all the shipping info (to and from address) on a piece of paper inside the box in case the label gets damaged. I also write the info on the box in marker and then tape a label that I print on the computer over that. That way the printed label is nice and legible, but there is back-up info incase it gets damaged.
