shipping from Houston to Austrialia

I'm trying to ship a knife through USPS to Australia, and USPS is telling me that I can't ship any weapons (despite describing it as a folding pocket knife) unless I'm a dealer.

The experiences of the buyer (Aussie (can I say Aussie?,haha)) tells him that it shouldn't be any issue based on his previous experiences, but I haven't been as lucky.

Could anyone in Houston (or Woodlands/Tomball/Spring) tell me if they've had similar issues?

I am not in the Texas area but since Postal Standards are generally nationally recognized I will chime in. I shipped a fixed blade to someone in Austrailia a while back. I used click n ship for online shipping. On the customs form, I believe I either put "knife" or "camping tool". It was accepted by my post office and got to the fella in Aussie without incident. This all happened about 4-6 mos ago so perhaps the standards have (I doubt that). Not sure what the problem is here but perhaps if you avoid the PO and simply click n ship online you'll have much better luck.

Sounds like someone at the local post office is just trying to cover his/her arse, for instance if you were to pull a Liu Kang and package it in a way that could injure someone, ship a knife that was subject to export or import restrictions, etc. I'm not saying that you're planning to do any of those things, of course -- just a guess as to why the PO employee is being overly cautious/restrictive.
 
Recently shipped to austalia. To get the knife there I was required to remove the blade and ship the handle and blade seperatly describing them as parts and shipped the two packages to two diffrent adresses. Was a hassel but the guy I delt with was pretty cool

Haha, the thing I was alluding to was how he packaged a fixed blade in a box that was too small for it -- with the result that the tip of the knife was poking out one corner of the box -- in order to save a few bucks on shipping.
 
Shipped to Aus this week, the usps worker looked on her list of iyems that were prohibeted and she said I was good to go. Never had an issue shipping there. They dont pay import tax either so you wont ever be asked to lie about the value.
 
I've shipped a fixed blade there (no folders though) and it was easy. Hell, shipping there was cheaper than some of the US shipments I've made.
 
Just checked my old emails. Just tighten the pivot to the point of being unable to open the knife. The use the "flick method" to ensure that no "gravity knives" make it into the country.
 
I have bought heaps of knives from the US, Germany ,UK.Poland,Belgum & Argintina . Never had a problem geting them in to OZ.

Africa hay? lol He woluld of chewed his nails off by now.
 
I would mark it as a camping tool for sure. Never had a problem that way. When the clerk goes into the "is there anything hazardous, dangerous, etc" routine just tell them no. Printing the label online is easier. You can just hand the package to the carrier. Most of them can scan it so it shows up as accepted also.
 
Having used the click and ship method, it seemed to shut the clerk up. Hopefully it all works out and makes it to South Africa. Thanks for all the help guys!
