I wont mention the maker of this knife....but , I went to order a 40 dollar knife I had been looking at, and really liked...when I went to order it...shipping was 8.95 for a small knife...just cant bring myself to do it..ill find another knife I like..

what do u all pay shipping usually for a small knife...I know I can send a small knife anywhere in the u.s for under 3 bucks..first class mail

I'm sure you can find a similar knife for around $50 with "free" shipping. :D

If this knife is from a maker, in addition to postage, you also have to take into account the person's time spent going to the post office, standing in line, coming back to the shop, etc etc etc.

Some of these guys are in the middle of the woods.

Yeah, you have to watch some of these shipping charges.

On average, I try to go the USPS box which should run around $5 for two day delivery w/ tracking. Always had good luck with it. It's basically a trade-off between overnight and slow-boat. I won't use a dealer who obviously pads the real cost of shipment. I think in general when you use OOOPS and FedEx shipping prices get a bit higher.

IMO express shipping should be no charge with some of these $400+ knives. Anything over $500 should be next day, no charge. Like that'll happen.......

well its not really a maker...its a company...that is a maker and also sells production knives...its a big set up..not someone who has to drive 10 miles to the post office..

and yes that's what I plan to do...find another knife that's doesn't have the hefty shipping price...

Then order though one of their retailers.

Like Marcinek said though, a comparable knife to whatever one you had in mind is like going to be a few dollars more anyway, with free shipping negated by the increased cost.

I purchased a 940-1 on Amazon last Saturday with the Free shipping. It's now a week later and the knife is still sitting at the Post Office in California... I'll never do "free" shipping again. Priority or I'll get it somewhere else. First class mail sits until the carrier is full and then it goes... over a week wait for a $250 purchase is ridiculous. I never send anything That is not Priority

Right! LOL :D Where I draw the line is when the shipping costs exceed the cost of the item I'm purchasing. Otherwise I just consider shipping costs to be part of the price I have to pay for the convenience of being able to purchase stuff on the interwebs.

I agree that "free shipping" doesn't mean much it if it takes forever. I once waited
a week on a $150 then called them and they said they'd send it out today. WTF?
I had to wait another 5 days. Definitely avoid places that overcharge for shipping but make sure if you;re paying for shipping it's not the slowest/cheapest method.

well this post wasn't supposed to be about what knife I choose...it was about what u think fair shipping price is on a 2.4 oz knife.....like stated before im not paying 9 bucks shipping...

I actually stopped ordering from the biggest big box outdoor store for this reason...I ordered from them a spool of fly line...extremely light and small...8 bucks shipping.......... I feel like most of these companies like these 2 are taking advantage of the man who doesn't spend a bunch of money...and frankly a lot of times I don't have a bunch of money to spend...so I don't feel like u should jack shipping on me....the knife company I speak of..if u buy 35 knives from them its 8.95 shipping..

so my take on this is..they are thinking we are gonna loose some money shipping to the guy who makes a big order...so lets make it back on the guy who orders one knife...america at its best

First off, I would never want a knife shipped to me by first class mail. At the very least it would have to be Priority Mail or UPS or FedEx. I have no problem paying 8.95 shipping for the knife I want if it means having it tracked and delivered to my door in a timely manner. Beats having to drive out to a retailer who will most likely sell the item for a bit more than what it sells for online.

Yep. Not too many firms will ship for actual shipping costs. Flat rate shipping with "free" shipping above a certain amount of goods purchased seems to be pretty much the norm these days.

True but why do that when you can just get a bunch of small flat rate boxes and print out the label online and just pop it in the mail box. No gas or anyones time is wasted. Plus it's cheaper printing the label out.

Depends on the size of the knife and how much insurance you want.

For a smallish folder with $40 in value, $5.65 in a priority mail small flat rate box is easy.

You can make or find smaller boxes and, barring too much weight, ship for a little cheaper (save 2.50? ).

I just paid almost $10 to ship a knife for a passaround, not including the box, the shipping tape, printing supplies to print the label.

My time is also a sunk cost.

Anymore, I just figure the cost of shipping and paypal fees into anything I am selling, although I don't sell much at all. It is just easier and it avoids hurt feelings, everyone wins.

Small flat rate priority box with Signature confirmation will round out to $8.00 postage whether it weighs 2 oz. or 20 pounds. The shipper is covered with the signature feature, and it comes with $50 automatic insurance.

If you bought a cheap knife or an expensive knife from me, that's the way you would receive it.

You always have the choice to skip shipping and drive over there and pick it up.

How much would that cost?

Sure flat rate box has a set price but that does not cover the time and cost of handling.

When I ship a knife I do not leave it in the mail box for the carrier to pickup. I do not want it traveling all around town with the carrier until he gets back at post office.

I take the knife and drive down to the post office, stand in line and make sure it gets scanned in and get a receipt it was scanned.

That cost is above and beyond the cost of the flat rate box.

How many times has a person dropped off a box or passed it off to the carrier only to not have it scanned and then you sweat for days for it to show up....or the buyer knows it was not scanned and then tries to claim they never got it?

I see where you're coming from in a way. But I fail to see how flat rate shipping is a bad thing. For you right now you're buying one item at a time. What if you won the lottery or came into some money and decided to treat yourself by buying 5 or even 10 items. Would you want to pay $40+ in shipping charges on a 3-5lb box?

Cost of shipping (not including things like transaction fees, shipping materials, and time/labor involved) is typically determined both by the weight and distance that the package is going. For instance, I sell a lot of machetes, which are inexpensive in purchase price but are long and relatively heavy--that bumps up the cost of shipping especially if going all the way across the country. Also, it's often difficult for a retailer's order system to tell if an order qualifies for flat rate shipping because then you're dealing with the actual dimensions of the product or products and if there's a suitable box they'll fit in. Unless a company only deals in items that can always be flat-rated then it's not uncommon to need to check and see if a less expensive method is available. Maybe try writing them to see if they have a way to send if for less. Just some thoughts. :)

I recently purchased an $8 knife and it was mailed free - from Asia.

I own a mail order business and ship everything domestic via priority. My 12x13x3, 1.3 lbs box ships for $6-9, and USPS provides the boxes for free. There's not much reason that Priority 2 day service should cost much more than $6 for a knife.
