Update:

Thanks to all for the great comments. Once I make a sale or two, I will provide a summary of the process.

Good Morning:

I am a relatively new. member. I have purchased and have ben very satisfied with all of my purchases on this forum. the transaction process with fellow members have gone very well.
I now want to sell a few of my excess knives. I have purchased too Many. Sound familiar!!

Couple of questions.
What is the best shipping service to use, for cost and ease of use?
How do you determine the cost, if you can prior to the sale?

Thanks in advance. any other insight would be appreciated.

Just use pirate ship. Whatever service is cheapest is generally fine. It's cheaper than elsewhere and has better insurance

They all have had problems, I’ve had good luck with USPS. I ship priority using their boxes. I pick them up at no cost at my local P.O. The biggest problem I’ve read herewith any of the services is poorly packed knives that have been stolen.
You can set up an account and do everything from home. I’m sure it’s the same for any carrier.
For me a rule of thumb is to add $20 to the selling price to cover shipping and insurance.
Make sure your package is secured, tape is cheap compared to losing a knife in transit, always get an acceptance receipt to verify it has been dropped off.

UPS and FEDEX are absolutely terrible where I live.

Bad thing is you will hear 100 different people say 100 different carriers. 😁

As stated above, it’s basically a crap shoot on any given day, but I’ve had the best luck with USPS. As long as you package it well. If you do a lousy job, chances are you’ll get lousy results.

I've used USPS for years with good results however I learned to never take their additional insurance. The only knife I had stolen was insured for $600 and had to fight with them to get $250 back. The insurance tag is a red flag invite to theives.

Services like Pirate Ship use their own insurance which is much better than the carrier's insurance.

I have done fine with usps priority. A few have been delayed, but they got there. I use their boxes, but be sure to at least tape the ends, which can open when center is pushed in. In general tape is your friend and use it. When possible I tape the knife(in baggie)to the inside of the box also,

I have had mostly good & some atrociously bad experiences with USPS, UPS & FedEx, as a buyer waiting for a delivery.

I don't sell much but, when I do, I always use USPS because it's usually the cheapest & most convenient for me.

My past experience with USPS as a seller (knock on wood) has always been good.

I'd only use UPS or FedEx if the cost was substantially cheaper than USPS, which has not been the case in the past.

I'm gonna try Pirate Ship next time I sell something...which is not often. I've seen some members use it and appear to be satisfied.

It’s absolutely legit. The best part is their insurance. $2 per $100 of insurance. They pay out with hardly any questions asked. No hassle as they will handle the carrier.

If you are looking for a very secure shipping I will recommend USPS registered & insured ,it is slow though .

I didn't know it was considered taboo, but members here seem to Not like bubble envelopes. I didn't know that when I sent a couple. They shipped fine, but I don't think I'd do That again. Maybe I was lucky.
-just something else to take into account.

If you don't mind, what did they require in that regard? (And I will say that the way you handled our one transaction together was exemplary, so your opinion matters to me.)

I think it just depends. I ship smaller, less expensive knives wrapped in a layer of extra bubble wrap and then in a bubble mailer, and i put a piece of tape over all 4 side of the mailer.

Now obviously, if you use a regular mailer, no tape, and no bubble wrap, that would be an issue haha.

As long as it’s not a fixed blade (even in a sheath) just thrown in a bubble mailer then bubble mailer it all to me.

Thankyou sir!

I bought $300 insurance on a package I sent. The tracking showed out for delivery but never delivered. After about 3 weeks I contacted customer service via the chat. They checked it and after a few days paid me out via zelle. This was over a year ago.

Did they need to know the contents, and did you give a full description? Or did it not matter?

My apologies, yes I had to fill out a form that they linked me too. They do have step by step instructions on the website now.
