Shipping to a foreign country.

After giving it some though, I don't remember having any problems here or on the other knife forums. Most of my problems have happened with buyers on eBay.

Getting the buyer to understand that you will not be responsible for lost or stolen items can be difficult at times. I have never lost an item sent out of the US, but sooner or later it will happen.

The last time I shipped an item to Japan, I asked for a return receipt or some way to find out if the item was delivered. I was told that most foreign postal services will not do that.

Actually, things have not been much better here. According to the USPS website, the last 4 packages that I sent with tracking numbers were never delivered. :mad:

That is strange. I have purchased about twenty knives from the States and have never had one sit in Customs for more than a couple of days. I had a knife shipped to me last Thursday and I received it today. There was a time awhile back that Canada Customs inspectors were on strike, but luckily I didn't have any knives coming to me at that time.

USPS tracking is worthless once the item left the USA. Most knives I bought this year are still not delivered based on USPS tracking, and they got here just fine :)

Actually, I was referring to packages mailed to US addresses. The knife I sent to Gunnar went priority mail, insured with signature confirmation. As far as the USPS website is concerned it got to NJ, but was never delivered or picked up. The same with a package to Upland,CA another to KS and another to NC. The only way I could find out if the package was delivered was to e-mail the person I sent it to. The clerks at my local post office blame it on contract workers.:grumpy: I may have to switch to UPS or Fedex. It's more expensive, but they have reliable tracking. Unfortunately, they don't deliver to PO boxes.

At least 1 very well known knife make sends everything by express mail. If the item is not delivered within the guaranteed time, the postage is refunded. More often then not, he got his money back.

Again, this has been my experience lately. You may be getting better service.

I received some Frost Blades for making into my own knives. On the package was a warning on the side was 'Opened by Customs' sticker. I checked inside and there was some blood on the packaging. It took some effort to take off the stains on the carbon laminates. It took longer to take the smile off my face.

Here they are really not well educated, they try to follow by the book and this is where illiteracy becomes interesting. I don't receive knives by mail now as I have had to fight wrong duties and the contents listed as offensive military hardware (same level as Phantoms). I eventually got them through via an agent but anything new confuses them. Yell and they freeze like a rabbit in the headlights. It is cheaper and quicker to drive to J'burg and pick them up.
 
I'm here in Thailand and have had registered, return receipt packages, thrown on my lawn if I'm not home. The truth is the more tags, labels, etc. that you attached to your package the more attractive it is for theft. I'll never forget the story about the Hope diamond being shipped by regular mail many years ago. Made it to the museum just fine. Who would have thunk it?
 
i've shipped to taiwan, canada & mexico & while it wasnt a big hassle it was a bigger pain than shipping in the US imho.

i wont do it anymore unless i know the other person, or its a deal i cant pass up.

does take longer too in my experience, both ways.
 
I have bought quite a few knives on the Forum some of them in the $300 region, I have never had a problem with lost packages and usually get them within a week by USPS Global Priority mail.

I will explain to sellers that I absolve them of any responsibility for lost packages and seem to work fine. I have also sent knives to the US by International Signed For and never had a problem either. The custom form only needs at most 8 words to fill in and ticking a box. Its just something to do if you want the best price for your knives.
