I have to ship a knife to Canada for a trade and it is my first time shipping to Canada. Shipped to Brazil without any hassle and to Russia but not knives so am wondering "Is there any special postage required or anything for a knife shipping internationally"? Probably a stupid ? but somebody told me today i had to buy some special postage and am now paranoid about it. Can i just ship the knife to Canada through USPS 2 day priority? It's a Zt 0770 if that makes a difference. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

A gentleman that won my giveaway was located in Canada. I went to the post office usps filled out custom form. I was honest and wrote, 1 flashlight, 1 wallet ,and 1 small knife. Took it to the counter, and the lady said out loud, real loud , you can't ship a knife usps. I told her I could, she said no you can't, no sharp object.

Well I walked away and told her to have a great day.

I went to fedex. Items shipped ups, should arrive in a week.
Hope that helps.

That's good to know but a bummer to hear. UPS and Fedex are expensive in my limited experience with them. I don't think i even have a Fedex location near me and UPS is a ways away. Thanks alot for the info though if no one would have responded would have shipped without a second thought. Do they say no sharp objects cause they have to open them at customs do you think?

I uh kind of asked them for a list of things I can't ship. She said go online and look. Then I said, how do you think I got this knife? USPS! then she said if you own a business you can ship knives. I said I do own a business ( nothing to do with knives) but I own a business. Then she said a business can ship to a business. Bye this time I was causing a screen and holding up the line, so I exited stage left. Lol

LOL. Ya i've been there before with there employee's not really knowing what there doing. I get so pissed just leave in the middle of conversation:) I'm hoping somebody will say yes i do ship knives by USPS priority mail from USA<>Canada. After getting so angry with the Usps emloyee's i try not to step foot in there if possible and just buy postage online so thinking it could work that way. IDK. Might have to go to UPS store it's impossible to create a shipment online for UPS. :grumpy:So complicating. This Sux.

Is you ship with UPS or Fed-ex the guy in Canada will get dinged with a $50 brokerage fee! Ship USPS and there is no brokerage fee. Also it may be advisable to tighten the pivot so it is less flickable. AO and flippers are perfectly legal in Canada but customs guys can be d*cks and give your customer a hassle with the whole gravity knife centrifugal force nonsense.

You can ships knives swords etc to Canada via USPS. I've been buying sharp things from the US since the late 80's, there are no regs against it, the postal employee who said otherwise is full of it.

No special postage, just a simple customs form.
You can use a regular flat rate priority box and it goes priority international. Something like $15-20 I think.

The only illegal sharp things up here are switchblades, automatics, balis, ballistic knives and push-knives. Also knives with wrap around metal guards that look like brass knuckles can be interpreted as unimportable. Brass knuckles by themselves are illegal.

Thanks for all the info guys. Can i just write on the custom's form "knife" then and have to make it to canada without problems at customs? Is it not really a problem/illegal like the USPS worker told KRAV?

I usually write "pocket knife" since it sounds less threatening to most people. Might not make a diffence but it doesn't hurt. I've seen people recommend putting "camp tool" or the like but if I worked customs that would bug me as its sort of a lie.

That USPS worker acted foolishly and should be reported to their supervisor. Absolutely not against the rules to ship knives in general through USPS. Automatics and illegal items are a different story.

Sounds like a good idea saying pocket knife or camp tool spketch. Is a knife through customs considered dangerous goods like to has the option for or can i just put gift?

Just bought shipping online didn't look like a knife would be considered a dangerous goods that i seen (i hope). Shoulda maybe just went to post office to ask but every time i go there they give me the same treatment as Krav. Not having any clue what the USPS policies actually are and i end up looking like a jerk trying to prove they don't know there own dang companies policy's. Have been told that i couldn't return a bottle of cologne to the seller cause can't ship it through the mail. I said "usps delivered this package to me" and they just told me again can't ship flammables through the mail but buy plenty of butane and other flammable stuff that gets delivered from usps so IDK. I've heard all you have to do is write flammable on the package and your good to go for shipping it. Who knows. All i know is my PO won't let me ship it. Anyways I hope this international shipping and trade goes smoothly. thanks again everyone for the info. Great people here at BF.

Don't use "knife" in any custom form anywhere it will get stopped. Use USPS always and tighten the crap out of the pivot. After you crank the pivot, it is safe to go thru if it opens by two hands only, if you can still fully flick or flip it after you tighten the pivot, it will open when you wrist flick it, thus deemed illegal in Canada as a knife opening by centrigal force.

Never use UPS or Fed Ex unless asked or you are willing to help cover the $50+, don't lie on the form- knife/camping tool is fine, but in my experience cryptic descriptions are more likely to be stopped and investigated. I've had dozens of shipments marked knife arrive unmolested. Tighten the pivot so it can't be flicked, like others said- no push daggers (that aren't ulu's), autos, balis, or knuckle dusters. All else is good to go!

USPS put out a sign for their clerks information that listed objects that weren't acceptable. One of those was auto knives but the sign was ambiguous, and confused some clerks into thinking all knives were a no go. Stupidstupidstupid.

Ask to speak to the postmaster or the stupid clerk will continue to screw up the job.

NO UPS OR FEDEX TO CANADA. They overcharge disgracefully.

What I find is the USPS site hard to navigate but after a half hour,I was able to find the a manual for postal employees in regards to mailing knives domestically within the US.In the publications section of the site,in Pub. 52 - "Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail",page 99 and page 115 in the pdf format.

Knives and Sharp Instruments
General
Sharp instruments include all sharp-pointed or sharp-edged implements
such as knives, tools, ice picks, razor blades, stilettos, or similar devices.
When uncertain about the mailability of
a sharp instrument or a switchblade
knife, a ruling may be requested from the local postmaster

Switchblade Knife
A switchblade knife has a blade that opens automatically by hand pressure
applied to a button or other device in the handle, or by operation of inertia,
gravity, or both.

Mailability
A switchblade knife, as defined in
441.2
, is mailable only to the following
categories of addressees:
a. Certain designated supply or procurement officers and employees
ordering, procuring, or purchasing them for use in connection with their
respective governments or organizations, such as:
(1) Civilian or armed forces suppl
y or procurement officers, and
employees of the federal government.
(2) Supply or procurement officers of the National Guard, the Air
National Guard, or the militia of a
state, territory, or
the District of
Columbia.
(3) Supply or procurement officers or employees of the municipal
government of the District of Columbia, or of the government of
any state or territory, or of any county, city, or other political
subdivision of a state or territory.
Note:
Addressee Identification. Before delivering a shipment (or
parcel) that contains an article or articles described in
441.2
, a
USPS employee may require that the recipient identify himself or
herself as being in one of the categories in
442
a
.
b. Manufacturers or bona fide dealers of such knives in connection with a
shipment made to an address in one of the above categories.

Packaging and Marking

General
All sharp-pointed or sharp-edged instruments such as knives, tools, ice
picks, razor blades, etc., that are otherwise mailable, must be securely
packaged in a strong container. An inner and outer packaging container is
recommended. Sufficient cushioning material must be used to protect the
sharp points and edges from cutting through the outer packaging during
normal Postal Service handling.

Marking

No marking of any kind that indicates the nature of the contents may be
placed on the outside of any mailpiece containing a switchblade knife

Sorry to hear your having such a hard time shipping your knife to Canada. As a Canadian, I hope this experience doesn't become a negative one in the end. Just a tip for you,did you know that if you still wanted to use your own box, First Class Mail might be an option, as I understand as of this year, you can track and insure them.
